WASHINGTON (AP) ? One of the CIA's highest-ranking women, who once ran a CIA prison in Thailand where terror suspects were waterboarded, has been bypassed for the agency's top spy job.
Under pressure from Congress, CIA Director John Brennan passed over the woman, one of the last remaining senior CIA officers who held leadership roles in the agency's interrogation and detention program.
The agency announced the decision in an email but did not identify the officer, who remains undercover. The Washington Post first reported on the assignment.
The new head of the National Clandestine Service, the CIA's operational arm, is a well-liked veteran who former officials said once ran the covert action to help remove Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic from power. Those officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the operation.
