Please Stop Killing Yourself With Food!

When I was young, I ate and drank whatever I wanted whenever I wanted with no regard to how that would affect my health in the future. I loved fast food and always got a large sugary coke with every take out order. Thinking back on my college days, probably the healthiest food I ate was when we would sleep til noon on Saturdays and then head down to the all you can eat super cheap Mexican buffet where we would eat 3 meals in one plus triple deserts all around.

Well, like may of my friends, I paid for this reckless lifestyle because in my 40?s I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I felt like someone was slapping me hard in the face when they started showing me how to use glucose monitoring machine and discussing whether or not I should start on insulin or just take oral medication 3 times a day. That?s the day I was forced to faced reality about my incredibly poor diet.

In addition to my own diagnosis, several of my friends have also been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, cancer, and other diseases cause wholly or partly by eating bad food. Most of my friends in their 40?s already have arthritis and other other aches and pains that shouldn?t come on until later in life. Disease is so prevalent in my generation in fact, I?m not even surprised anymore when someone tells me they have some type of debilitating disease.

We have become desensitized to the news about disease but when you really start thinking about it, we have an alarming epidemic of disease and it is now happening worldwide! Of course, in the nations where the average diet is the worst, we see the most disease. It seems to have started mostly in America and then like a cancer it quickly spread into other countries and other cultures as they started eating more like Americans.

Why do we do it?

Why do we continue to kill ourselves with food?

Is it because bad food tastes good? Frankly, now that I eat healthy, I find that fast food and other highly processed food totally lacks flavor and in some cases even tastes and smells so bad by comparison I can?t even stand to put a single bite in my mouth. I have friends that live on mostly a processed food diet that love to come to my house for dinner because they love tasting good healthy food. Once you start eating healthy food, your tastebuds don?t want the yucky processed stuff.

So again I ask, why do we continue to kill ourselves with food?

Part of the reason I suspect is that we are addicted, and like all addicts, it is just hard for us to stop no matter how much we know that the processed food we?re eating is bad and will eventually cause health problems.

But then I think there is another reason too. In fact, this reason may be even more important in the big scheme of things.

Bad food like trans fat, high fructose corn syrup, gluten, genetically modified foods, and highly processed foods where the nutrients have been destroyed don?t kill you fast.

Bad foods, like the list above, kill you SLOWLY.

In fact, they kill you so slowly you hardly notice it when it is happening until one day you finally get that rude awakening at the doctor?s office:

I?m sorry to tell you Mr. or Ms. Bad Food, but you have type 2 diabetes, cancer, or some other horrible health issue. You suddenly realize that what they are telling you is going to totally change your life for the worse. You realize that your life is very likely going to end far sooner than it would have ended had you been eating better quality food.

It truly is a RUDE awakening. It makes you suddenly realize all the things you want to live for.

So, to the young people out there, I say to you from the bottom of my heart: please stop killing yourself with food! Eliminate toxins like trans fat, high fructose corn syrup, and genetically modified food from your diet. Eat lots of greens and colorful organic vegetables. Eat less meat and more salads. Steam don?t boil. Drink alkaline water, not soda pop. Eat organic as much as possible. Eat foods with lots of fiber like beans. Eat healthy and stay fit. It?s easier to do when you start young.

To the parents of young people, I say please set a good example for your kids. Eating habits start as a kid and bad habits are really hard to break once you?re an adult. ?Kid food? should not be overly processed chicken nuggets and bags of genetically modified vegetables fried in trans fat! Teach your kids to love greens. Help them have fun with making colorful salads. Maybe have build your tortilla?s nights with only healthy ingredients. Teach your kids how to stir-fry and show them how much fun it can be to prepare such a meal. When your kids do eat deserts, make sure it doesn?t contain high fructose corn syrup. Teach your kids to read food labels. Those young eyes are eager to read the tiny print for you that food manufacturers like put on food. Turn it into a game and let your kids play detective and find the toxic ingredients like partially-hydrogenated oils and high fructose corn syrup. Buy organic and every time you do remind them that you?re willing to pay a little more because you love them so much. Visit an organic farm with them and show them where real food comes from.

To all the adults who, like me, have been diagnosed with a disease like type 2 diabetes because you didn?t take care of yourself for a long time, please take comfort that there is still hope. It is NOT too late to do something about it. You CAN reverse many of these diseases brought on by years of eating bad food. I am living proof of that because I have completely reverse my type 2 diabetes through diet and other natural means.

To everyone, please stop killing yourself with food!
