SWANSBORO, N.C.--On Sunday, more than two dozen volunteers combed the beach and shoveled sand at Hammocks Beach State Park in Swansboro.

It was part of the park's first ever Chris Campbell Community Service Day.

Campbell was a Navy SEAL who was killed in Afghanistan in 2011, and he was once a life guard at the park.

Ranger Sarah Kendrick says the day is meant to honor his legacy.

"We decided as a staff and some of Chris Campbell's friends came to us and said let's do something to honor him at a place that he loved so we decided to have a community service day to honor him and have folks come out and enjoy the beach but still get some work done," said Kendrick.

Most of the volunteers were from the Swansboro Young Marines.

Volunteer Julie Ayers and her sister Michelle were helping pick up trash on the beach.
Julie said they couldn't wait to come volunteer in the park.

"Well when we first heard of it I was actually pretty excited and so was my sister so we decided we should come out here and help," said Julie Ayers.

Park rangers said they want this to become an annual tradition and are already planning another community service day for next August.
