Insight: Does China's next leader have a soft spot for Tibet?

BEIJING/DHARAMSALA (Reuters) - For decades, Beijing has maintained that the Dalai Lama is a separatist, but Tibet's exiled spiritual leader once had a special relationship with the father of Xi Jinping, the man in line to become China's next president.

Few people know what Xi, whose ascent to the leadership is likely to be approved at a Communist Party congress later this year, thinks of Tibet or the Dalai Lama.

But his late father, Xi Zhongxun, a liberal-minded former vice premier, had a close bond with the Tibetan leader who once gave the elder Xi an expensive watch in the 1950s, a gift that the senior party official was still wearing decades later.

The Dalai Lama, 77, recalls the elder Xi as "very friendly, comparatively more open-minded, very nice" and says he only gave watches back then to those Chinese officials he felt close to.

"We Tibetans, we get these different varieties of watch easily from India. So we take advantage of that, and brought some watches to some people when we feel some sort of close feeling, as a gift like that," the Dalai Lama said in an interview in the Indian town of Dharamsala, a capital for Tibetan exiles in the foothills of the Himalayas.

The Dalai Lama gave the watch to the elder Xi in 1954 during an extended visit to Beijing. Xi was one of the officials who spent time with the young Dalai Lama in the capital where he spent five to six months studying Chinese and Marxism.

The Dalai Lama fled to India five years later, after a failed uprising against Communist rule, but as late as 1979, Xi senior was still wearing the watch, the make and style of which the Dalai Lama can no longer remember.

Xi senior was a dove in the party, championing the rights of Tibetans, Uighurs and other ethnic minorities. He also opposed the army crackdown on the 1989 Tiananmen student protests and was alone in criticizing the sacking of liberal party chief Hu Yaobang by the Old Guard in 1987. Xi senior died in 2002.

The Dalai Lama has never met Xi junior but his fondness for the father is, for some, a sign that China's next leader may adopt a more reformist approach to Tibet once he formally succeeds President Hu Jintao next March. Some expect him to be more tolerant of Muslim Uighurs in the western region of Xinjiang, and also of Taiwan, the independently ruled island that China has vowed to take back, by force if necessary.

"To understand what kind of leader Xi Jinping will be, one must study his father's (policies)," said Bao Tong, one-time top aide to purged party chief Zhao Ziyang. Bao was jailed for seven years for sympathizing with student-led demonstrations for democracy centered on Beijing's Tiananmen Square in 1989.

"No (Chinese) Communist will betray his father," he added.

LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON?

Xi senior is looked on favorably by China's leaders with plans already made to commemorate his 100th birth anniversary in mid-October next year with a ceremony at the Great Hall of the People and editorials and commentaries in state media eulogizing him, sources with ties to the leadership said.

But even if Xi junior wants to pursue a reform agenda, he is likely to bide his time.

"The key is whether Xi Jinping feels confident of his power consolidation," said Lin Chong-Pin, a former Taiwan defense minister and China policy-maker who now teaches at Taipei's Tamkang University.

Lin added, however: "There will be a more tolerant policy not only (towards) Tibet, but also Xinjiang."

Taiwan, the democratic island Beijing claims as its own, may be the model for reconciliation with Tibet.

"Every generation of (Chinese) leaders must resolve problems left over from the previous generation," a source with leadership ties said.

"For Hu, it was Taiwan," the source added, referring to Hu mending fences with the island after his predecessor, Jiang Zemin, threatened it with war games in the run-up to its first direct presidential elections in 1996.

"For Xi, it's Tibet," the source said.

Asked if Xi might take a different tack on Tibet, a retired party official who used to work in Tibet said: "There has to be new thinking ... He (Xi) is surely aware of the problems."

"More and more government spending, more and more security, is not going to buy enduring stability in Tibet," the official said, referring to China pouring billions of yuan to develop Tibet, including opening a railway in 2006 linking it with the rest of China, and a crackdown in the wake of the unrest.

"The high-pressure policies can't continue forever," the official said, asking not to be identified and adding that these were his personal views.

CARDS HELD CLOSE

Xi has played his cards close to his chest and little is publicly known about his policies. Like Hu, he will be no political strongman, and will have to rule by consensus as the first among equals.

If Hu stays on as military chief, Hu may continue to hold sway over major policies, but is unlikely to oppose detente.

"Hu will not be an obstacle to (any) reconciliation" moves, a second source with leadership ties said.

Initially, Hu sought to make up for his decision to crush riots in Tibet in 1989 by issuing a decree to "protect Tibetan culture" in the early 2000s, but was taken aback when the Dalai Lama accused China of "cultural genocide".

China has defended its iron-fisted rule in Tibet, saying the region suffered from dire poverty, brutal exploitation of serfs and economic stagnation until 1950 when Communist troops "peacefully liberated" it and introduced "democratic reforms" in 1959.

Tensions over the issue are at their highest in years after a spate of protests and self-immolations by Tibetan activists, which have led to an intensified security crackdown. Fifty-one Tibetans have set themselves alight since 2009.

In the event the Dalai Lama dies in exile, it could radicalize exiled Tibetan youth who have clamored for independence and are frustrated with his "middle way" approach that advocates autonomy within China.

It could create a rallying point for Tibetans disgruntled with Communist rule and leave a destabilizing leadership vacuum.

"They (Chinese government) hope Tibet's political problem can be basically resolved once the Dalai Lama passes away," said Wang Lixiong, an author and expert on Tibet who has met the Dalai Lama several times.

Instead, Wang added, "the Dalai Lama's death could spark massive protests and even rioting."

"NORMAL HEARTS"

The outbreak of rioting in Tibet in 2008 ahead of the Beijing Olympics and a subsequent crackdown, which in turn sparked the self-immolations, may have prevented Hu from carrying out any reversal of China's hard-line policy on Tibet.

At the time of the riots, Xi commented: "We should have normal hearts" - a remark that was in stark contrast to insults rained on the Dalai Lama by the region's then Communist Party boss, Zhang Qingli, who called the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner a "jackal in Buddhist monk's robes" with "the face of a human and the heart of a beast".

Zhang was not alone. Many Chinese party, government and military officials and many ordinary Chinese are convinced the 2008 unrest was a Western plot to demonize Beijing before the Games and try to split Tibet from China.

But tempers appear to have cooled a bit.

Hu is maneuvering to promote one of his closest allies - Inner Mongolia party boss Hu Chunhua who speaks Tibetan, a rarity among Chinese officials - to the party's inner sanctum, two independent sources said, in a bid to retain clout after retiring. The two Hus are not related.

In a sign the party may at times be willing to reverse bad decisions or policies, it backed down recently after liberal intellectuals slammed it for forcing Tibetan Buddhist monasteries to put up portraits of Mao and other leaders, Columbia University Tibetologist Robbie Barnett said, adding that local officials now say this is voluntary.

Xi may have more to gain than lose from resuming talks with the Dalai Lama's envoys, but this may not happen anytime soon.

"They probably will take very small, incremental steps. They cannot take big steps," said Lin, the Taiwan-based academic.

Many challenges lie ahead.

"The talks process could start again at any point, we don't know. We shouldn't rule it out even though it looks very negative at the moment," Robbie Barnett, a Tibetologist at Columbia University, said in a telephone interview.

"He may have to prove that he's very tough ... so it could make it quite difficult for Xi. He could risk heavy attack from hardliners. It's quite complicated for him."

But Robert Lawrence Kuhn, author of "How China's Leaders Think", was more optimistic.

"He is a very practical, pragmatic, very down-to-earth kind of person," said Kuhn who has met Xi half a dozen times. "I don't think he has an overblown sense of his own person, which to me is very important. People could rally around him."

The Dalai Lama has said he hopes Xi will usher in a "realistic" and more open approach to Tibet, in the same way Deng Xiaoping introduced market reforms in the late 1970s that turned China into an economic powerhouse from a backwater.

After more than 50 years of confrontation with Beijing, the Dalai Lama is cautious but hopeful.

"I can't say for definite, but according to many Chinese friends, they say the new, coming leadership seems more lenient," he said in an interview in his audience room which was decorated with Buddhist paintings and a bust of Mahatma Gandhi.

He said there had been a stream of visitors to Dharamsala from China, including people who told him they had connections with senior Communist Party leaders. "These are very, very encouraging signs," he said. "No formal talks, but there are sort of signs among the Chinese officials or top leaders."

Tibetan exiles see other small signs that Xi could take a softer line on Tibet - his wife is a Buddhist, and Xi went out of his way in 2006, while party boss of Zhejiang province, to host the first World Buddhist Forum in the provincial capital.

A batch of U.S. diplomatic cables obtained and published by WikiLeaks last year said the Dalai Lama had "great affection" for Xi senior, and that Xi junior was quite taken with Buddhist mysticism at one point early in his career.

In July last year, Xi visited Tibet and pledged to crack down on the separatist "Dalai clique" and "completely smash any plot to destroy stability in Tibet and jeopardize national unity".

But a Western diplomat in Beijing cautioned that this was standard language and should not be construed to be hard-line. "No one wins prizes for saying the Dalai is ok," he said.

But many exiles are skeptical.

"I do not expect Xi junior to be like his father because he is facing a completely different situation, but I hope he can be different (from Hu Jintao)," said Khedroob Thondup, a nephew of the Dalai Lama who visited China more than 10 times with his father, Gyalo Thondup, as unofficial envoys of the Dalai Lama.

Another nephew, Tenzin Taklha, who is also a secretary to the Dalai Lama, said: "Even if it does happen it won't be substantial, just to show the world the door is open again."

The Dalai Lama, too, has yet to be convinced that Beijing will soften its stance on Tibet - even if Xi turns out to have the same moderate inclination as his father - and says political reformers sometimes do not last long in the Communist Party.

"These realistic people sometime live a very short life."

Romney campaign starts accepting political donations by text

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Republican presidential campaign said on Friday it was launching a system to accept campaign donations by text message.

The system, aimed at encouraging contributions from small donors to the campaign of former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, will rival a similar scheme launched by Democratic President Barack Obama's team last week.

"We recognize that people lead busy lives, but they still want to support Governor Romney with whatever means they have," said Zac Moffatt, Romney campaign's digital director.

"This technology gives our incredible supporters the ability to make a donation in seconds - not minutes - with a text message."

Romney supporters in the United States will be able to donate to his campaign by texting the word GIVE to number 37377. Obama supporters can do the same by texting GIVE to 62262.

Text donations were first approved in early June and have been touted as a means of enabling smaller donors to contribute to a campaign marked by six-figure donations.

They can be made anonymously but have to be capped at $10 per text, $50 per month and $200 in total for one candidate or campaign. Donations are prohibited from foreigners, people under 18 or corporations, which could also mean corporate phone accounts.

The Obama campaign's small-donor prowess helped it set fundraising records and win the 2008 election. In this campaign it has been raising a notably larger portion of cash from small checks than Romney to help fund what is likely to be the most expensive U.S. election in history.

Analysts say the moves to secure donations by text message could amount to a revolution in a U.S. campaign finance, which has traditionally been dominated by multimillion-dollar donations.

The process of political giving via text would be similar to giving to charity: A donor would send a short message to a text code, confirm intention and eligibility, and later pay for the donation as part of the monthly cell phone bill.

LG 27-inch Personal Smart TV hands-on (updated: video)

LG 27inch Personal Smart TV handson updated video

Designed for more realistic living quarters, LG's unleashed its Personal Smart TV to the IFA crowds. With a 27-inch IPS display, 1920 x 1080, you'll find the typical stable of connectivity options, including two HDMI, three USB, component, LAN and SCART connections. The screen seemed well, lit with the IPS panel offering suitably reliable views from most angles. It's a pretty stylish-looking TV too, with a rough metallic finish to the bezel, which while not jaw-dropping, is still suitably narrow. The Smart TV functions were also navigable through LG's Smart Remote, offering a WiiMote-ish approach to media browsing. Our demo model was already packed with German media content -- in both 2D and 3D -- ready for when it launches here next month. It'll be appearing in shops across Europe around the same time, although there's no word on the set landing on US shores. Check out our quick hands-on video after the break.

Merkel urges Israel not to strike Iran: report

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to order a military strike against Iranian nuclear sites, the newspaper Haaretz reported on Friday.

The article, citing an Israeli official on condition of anonymity, said Merkel had called Netanyahu 10 days ago amid a wave of reports of an imminent Israeli attack, to give a "clear message as to her opposition" to such action.

Merkel urged Netanyahu to "give more time for sanctions and diplomacy to work," and warned of the consequences of such an attack for security in the Middle East.

A spokesman for Netanyahu refused to comment on the report or to confirm the conversation had taken place.

Israel and its main ally the United States accuse Iran of seeking to develop an atomic arsenal, but Tehran insists its nuclear programme is for civilian purposes only.

Netanyahu told a visiting US congressman last Friday that Iran was speeding up its quest for nuclear weapons in defiance of international sanctions.

The Haaretz article described the phone call as "exceptional" given the "almost complete disconnect" for two months between Merkel and Netanyahu after a sharp disagreement over Israeli settlements and the Palestinian issue.

Deputy government spokesman Georg Streiter told a Berlin news conference he could "not confirm (the information in) this article," reminding that Berlin did not believe in a military solution to the Iran nuclear issue.

Merkel also said an Israeli attack would have severe consequences for the European Union and that international sanctions, which were taking their toll on Iran, should be strengthened and given time to work, Haaretz wrote.

Iran has doubled its capacity to produce enriched uranium at its underground Fordo plant, according to an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report released late on Thursday.

The IAEA also accuses Iran of frustrating UN inspection of its Parchin plant, where it suspects tests of explosives that could be used in a nuclear warhead were carried out, by scrubbing it clean.

Netanyahu said on Thursday he would present to the UN the "truth about the terror regime of Iran" at his General Assembly address in late September.

15 years on, Diana remembered in London

AFP - Dozens of bouquets of flowers, posters and cards were left at the gates of Kensington Palace on Friday as Princess Diana was remembered on the 15th anniversary of her death.

Tourists, well-wishers and passers-by took photos and read the tributes at the royal residence in the British capital, Diana's official home from 1981 until her death, just as they had done in far larger numbers 15 years before.

Diana died aged 36 in a car crash in a Paris road tunnel on August 31, 1997 alongside her companion Dodi Fayed, triggering an outpouring of grief from much of the British public.

Within hours, a carpet of flowers had begun to spread out in front of the palace and many Britons threw off their reserve and mourned openly.

In one of the defining moments of his time in office, then prime minister Tony Blair described her as the "people's princess", striking a chord with the grieving nation.

Fifteen years on from that day Maria Scott, 41, who travelled from Newcastle in northeast England to visit the temporary memorial, said she had made the journey every year since Diana's death.

"Diana should be remembered because she's the mother of our future king and she should never be forgotten," Scott said.

"To the country I would say this tribute means a lot and I would like to think William and Harry would like this as well, that we are remembering their mother and all of her humanitarian work as well.

"She wasn't afraid to go the extra mile for anybody."

Petra Vallila, originally from Finland, placed a solitary bloom at the palace gates. The 29-year-old from Helsinki, now living in London, said: "I think it's kind of nice that people still come here.

"It's been 15 years, so it's a lovely way to remember someone who did a lot of good. She was obviously a very good person."

One card placed on the gate read: "Darling Diana, we loved you too much to ever forget you. Nor will we forgive those who betrayed you. Your wonderful sons think of you everyday and so do we.

"God bless you, with love from Margaret and Victor Funnel."

Princess Diana was the mother of Princes William and Harry, whom she had with Prince Charles before their divorce in 1996.

William is second in line to the British throne.

A Guide to Trading Forex to Earn that Extra Money! | Finance ...

Trading the stock market is normally only for people with a direct connection to the markets and captains of industry, right? Wrong. There are some markets which can be traded by just about anyone, which, if done successfully, could prove to be quite lucrative. One form of trading where it?s possible to potentially make significant profits is forex trading. Short for foreign exchange, trading forex involves speculating on whether one currency will strengthen or weaken against another currency e.g. GB Pound/US Dollar.

What is Forex trading

One of the best things about trading forex is that, unlike other, more traditional forms of trading, you could potentially make money regardless of whether there?s a rise or fall in the market you?re trading in. All you need to do to get started is open a forex trading account and find a guide to read before you commence trading. There are many great forex trading guides out there such as the how to trade forex guide by City Index, which is available online.

You choose a currency pair you know of, and either decide to ?go long?, which means you think the first currency in the pair will rise in value against the other. Or you can ?go short? if you believe a fall in value will happen. You start at a set price, and can close the trade when you?re satisfied with the level of profit made or want to limit any losses. It?s an attractive form of trading which can be done at any time of the day from Sunday night to Friday evening, as the forex markets are open for trading 24hrs a day between these days to allow for international time zones.

Any money made from trading forex could really help to boost your income. It could be used for home improvements, buying a new car or going on holiday abroad, or, if you have any debts that need clearing, you can wipe them out or reduce them if with your profits. However, when getting started, it?s important to be cautious, so that you know what to do in future when you?re used to forex trading.

It is also important to recognise that forex trading is a leveraged product and you can encounter losses that exceed your initial deposit. As such, forex trading is not for everyone. Please understand the risks involved before trading forex.

David Chalian Fired By Yahoo News After Shocking Remark About Mitt and Ann Romney

Yahoo News' Washington bureau chief David Chalian has been fired after a shocking remark he made about Mitt Romney and his wife Ann was caught on camera.

Chalian was overheard saying that the Romneys were "not concerned at all" about Hurricane Issac and are "happy to have a party with black people drowning."

Chalian seemed to be referring to the Republican National Convention taking place in Tampa just as the Category 1 storm barreled across the Gulf of Mexico.

Yesterday, Yahoo announced it was firing Chalian, "effective immediately."

"David Chalian's statement was inappropriate and does not represent the views of Yahoo," the company said in a statement following the controversy.

"We have already reached out to the Romney campaign, and we apologize to Mitt Romney, his staff, their supporters and anyone who was offended."

Chalian released an apology Wednesday. He wrote that he was "profoundly sorry" and described his statement as an "inappropriate and thoughtless joke."

Chalian also apologized privately and publicly to the Romney campaign.

Ann Romney spoke Tuesday at the RNC, followed by V.P. nominee Paul Ryan last night. Presidential hopeful Romney takes the stage this evening.

Parade of Mitt Romney supporters set tone ahead of Paul Ryan's speech

TAMPA, Fla. - Seizing the campaign spotlight, vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan embraced "the calling of my generation" to help lead the country in tough times Wednesday night and pledged to cheering Republican National Convention delegates and a prime time TV audience that Mitt Romney will make the bold and difficult decisions needed to repair the nation's economy.

"After four years of getting the runaround, America needs a turnaround, and the man for the job is Governor Mitt Romney," the 42-year-old Wisconsin lawmaker declared in what amounted to a national debut. He spoke at a convention dogged by Tropical Storm Isaac, downgraded from a hurricane but still inflicting misery on millions along the nearby northern Gulf Coast.

"We will not duck the tough issues; we will lead," Ryan said.

His speech was part attack on Obama, part spirited testimonial to Romney, all leavened by a loving tribute to Ryan's own mother, seated across the hall in a VIP box. "To this day, my mom is a role model," he said while she beamed and exchanged smiles with one of his children and delegates cheered.

As for Obama and the Democrats, he said they 'have run out of ideas. Their moment came and went. Fear and division is all they've got left."

Earlier, the convention spotlight shone on a parade of politicians who extolled Romney's experience.

Former?Minnesota?Gov.?Tim Pawlenty?called?Obama?the tattoo president.

Like a big tattoo, it seemed cool when you were young,?Pawlenty?told the convention, but later on that decision doesn't look so good and "you wonder: what was I thinking? The worst part is, you're going to have to explain it to your kids."

The barb was part of?Pawlenty's broader criticism of?Obama's failure to create more jobs and help the middle class. He said between things like taxes, Obamacare, the stimulus and?Joe Biden, "it's hard to choose?Obama's worst mistake."

Pawlenty?was passed over as?Mitt Romney's running mate, but the former Romney rival has been active campaigning for the?GOP?presidential nominee.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said raising U.S. standing in the world depends on solving problems at home, and that the?Republican presidential nominee?is the man to accomplish that task.

Rice?said America's position as the most successful political and economic experiment in history is in danger today.

She spoke of a crisis in education and asked for immigration laws that protect the country's borders while meeting economic needs.

Rice said there is a sense that America has for too long carried the burdens of supporting free people and free markets, but that if the United States does not lead no one will lead, fostering chaos.

Former pastor and one-time presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee spoke before Rice, saying he wanted to clear the air about whether "guys like me ? an evangelical ? would only support a fellow evangelical."

"Of the four people on the two tickets, the only self-professed evangelical is Barack Obama," Huckabee told the GOP convention.

"And he supports changing the definition of marriage; believes that human life is disposable and expendable at any time in the womb, even beyond the womb; and tells people of faith that they must bow their knees to the god of government and violate their faith and conscience in order to comply with what he calls health care."

Referring to the Republican nominee's Mormon faith, former Arkansas Gov. Huckabee said: "I care far less as to where Mitt Romney takes his family to church than I do about where he takes this country."

Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio said the United States is as beholden to China for purchasing bonds as it is to the Middle East for oil, adding that will end if Romney is elected president.

China holds nearly $1.2 trillion in U.S. debt.

Appearing before delegates on his 76th birthday, Arizona senator John McCain joked that he "had hopes of addressing you under different circumstances," a reference to the dreams he once had of speaking as the incumbent in the White House.

Without mentioning Obama by name, McCain accused the president of failing to lead ? on military spending and grave international issues as well.

"Sadly, for the lonely voices of dissent in Syria and Iran and elsewhere who feel forgotten in their darkness ... our president is not being true to our values," he said.

But another convention speaker, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, pointedly disagreed with Romney on defense spending.

"Republicans must acknowledge that not every dollar spent on the military is necessary or well-spent, and Democrats must admit that domestic welfare and entitlements must be reformed," he said.

Tweet This Do you know why it is important to only hire locksmiths that are licensed and professionally bonded? Most likely this sounds completely foreign to you, but it is information you should know. The most important reason is because many countries and states have such laws stating that locksmiths must be licensed. They actually must be licensed through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services.

The second reason is because when licenses are handed out to bonded locksmiths, the government and other agencies such as the FBI collect identification details. They collect such information as fingerprints. The reason for this is so that the government can see if the locksmith has a criminal background. If so, they will not issue a license to them to ensure the safety of customers. They want to make sure that the locksmith you are hiring is legitimate and that he uses his craft to ensure your safety, not to make things more accessible. (quality reviews)

The last reason you should only hire locksmiths that are licensed and professionally bonded is because there are unfortunately people out there that just want to take advantage of others. These people are often inexperienced and very unprofessional. They may call themselves locksmiths, but in actuality they are just looking for a quick way to make some cash. They will attempt to give you advice on different types of locks and keys, but they actually have no idea what they are talking about. They might also make extra copies of your keys or not properly install your new lock.

If you are looking for someone to give you qualified advice and recommendations on security needs in your home or office, you will want to ensure that the locksmith is licensed. Without a license they might not be able to install electronic security systems or locks properly. This could possibly cause wiring problems in your home and cause serious problems such as small fires or your electricity going out.

You should also find out if the locksmith you will be using has liability insurance. This insurance protects the client and locksmith against any accidental damage to the property or to life. A bonded locksmith is one that pays a fee, which is often quite nominal. Once the locksmith passes a background check, the bonding company is able to reimburse money in the case of an accident up to a previously agreed upon amount. Bonding is similar to insurance; it is just added protection for the client. Most big industries offer bonding for locksmiths in their respective areas.

Once you have found a Sacramento locksmith you like, you should ask them for the license number. With this number you can contact the business bureau in your area and see if the number is from a government issued license or not.

Obama Kicks Off College Tour

As Isaac bears down on New Orleans and the Gulf coast, President Obama hits the campaign trail undeterred today for a two-day college tour meant to energize younger voters and steal some of the spotlight from the Republican Convention in Florida.

Officials at Obama campaign headquarters in Chicago said they were closely monitoring the storm but decided to proceed with scheduled rallies at Iowa State University in Ames this afternoon and Colorado State University in Ft. Collins this evening. Obama has an event planned near the University of Virginia in Charlottesville on Wednesday.

"The President and his team will continue to monitor the storm and he will receive briefings throughout the day," an Obama campaign official told ABC News. "There are no scheduling updates at this time."

Obama, who relied on unprecedented enthusiasm and turnout among younger voters in 2008, is making an aggressive push to engage college students just as they return to campus for the new academic year. Classes at Iowa State and Colorado State began last week; the University of Virginia begins today.

Greeting students on 256 campuses across 31 states are Obama organizing teams ready to enlist new volunteers, register first-time voters and spread the word about getting out to vote in 70 days, according to a new campaign website targeting younger voters.

"The president will talk about what is at stake for young people in this country and the choice they face as we look ahead to the election in November," said Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki of the president's visits.

Tops among the issues Obama will address are college affordability, Psaki said, including the administration's record of increasing federal student aid to broaden access to higher education and help reduce debts.

Meanwhile, the Romney campaign said it would stress the disproportionately high rate of joblessness among younger Americans and recent college graduates during Obama's term. A full page ad greeting Obama in the Iowa State Daily highlights that roughly half of new college grads are unemployed or underemployed, while the youth unemployment rate is roughly double the national average, or 16.4 percent.

But while Obama - and Isaac - compete for the spotlight today, Republicans huddling in Tampa said they were determined to take center stage, pressing ahead with their convention schedule despite the storm. And Democrats in Tampa signaled they are poised to follow suit.

Obama campaign adviser Robert Gibbs and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley announced they would hold their first press conference in a "war room" just a stone's throw from the RNC convention hall, while in the skies above Tampa the Democratic National Committee planned to deploy an airplane toting a banner that reads: "Romney-Ryan-Akin: Too Extreme for Women."

World's Largest Mezuzah Affixed at Kosel ... - Yeshiva World News

World?s Largest Mezuzah Affixed at Kosel Entrance

(Tuesday, August 28th, 2012)

What is being described as ?the world?s largest mezuzah? was affixed at the upper entrance to the Kosel Plaza by Kosel Rav Shmuel Rabinowitz and Mr. Flatto Sharon. It is one of 3 mezuzos designed by famed artist Salvador Dali.

Rav Rabinowitz explains that in addition to the obligation to affix a mezuzah on the gate leading to the Kosel, this special large mezuzah will also remind visitors of the need to accept the Yolk of Torah and Mitzvos.

Sharon cited the significance of the Kosel, which brings millions of visitors annually, adding ?I hope with all my heart that the world?s largest mezuzah will bring a ??? ???? for us all?.

The bronze mezuzah case is 1.4 meters long, 25 centimeters wide, and weighs an amazing 40kg. The actual klaf is 60 centimeters long, written by Rav Zalman Michshevili (????????) and it was checked by the Kosel Sofer Rav Yisrael Gotleib.

Chocolate Cake Judging - Mcall.com: Blogging with Bill White Blog

August 28, 2012

Total People in Discussion: 1

Cake??? The Allentown Fair opens tonight, and that means I'll be judging chocolate cakes again in the Pennsylvania Preferred Chocolate Cake contest. This is one of these gigs that makes everyone envious, but I can tell you that tasting a couple of dozen chocolate cakes is more grueling than it sounds.

??? ?? Invariably, I end up staggering out of there in no shape to do my real work of the evening -- trudging around the fairgrounds on Preview Night to investigate the freak shows, dunk tank and other attractions, not to mention eating my traditional Vince's cheesesteak. Chocolate shock is not conducive to a lot of walking.

????? I'm actually in that file photo above. You can see the back of my Hawaian shirt and my bald spot right behind the red-haired judge. (One of my fellow judges, WLEV radio personality Laura St. James, also posted an enticing photo from one of the past contests. You can see it here.)

????? I know people envy us for this job, because the contest always draws a mob of freeloaders waiting for the samples at the end. I don't blame them. If I only had to eat one piece of chocolate cake, I'd be out there, too. But it is possible to have too much of a good thing.

???? Actually, I'm on a food judging roll. I was one of the judges for Sunday afternoon's ArtsQuest Appetizer Bowl at SteelStacks, and I'll be judging peach desserts Saturday evening at the fair. It's tough work, but someone has to do it.

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Numerous studies have shown the powerful effect that exercise can have on cancer care and recovery. For patients who have gone through breast or colon cancer treatment, regular exercise has been found to reduce recurrence of the disease by up to 50 percent. But many cancer patients are reluctant to exercise, and few discuss it with their oncologists, according to a Mayo Clinic study published in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management.

"As doctors, we often tell patients that exercise is important, but to this point, nobody had studied what patients know about exercise, how they feel about it and what tends to get in the way," says lead author Andrea Cheville, M.D., of Mayo Clinic's Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The study is part of a series of investigations looking at exercise habits among cancer patients. Researchers found that patients who exercised regularly before their diagnosis were more likely to exercise than those who had not. Many patients considered daily activities, such as gardening, sufficient exercise.

"There was a real sense of 'What I do every day, that's my exercise,'" says Dr. Cheville, noting that most patients didn't realize daily activities tend to require minimal effort. "Most were not aware that inactivity can contribute to weakening of the body and greater vulnerability to problems, including symptoms of cancer."

In addition, researchers found that patients took exercise advice most seriously when it came directly from their oncologists, but none of those studied had discussed it with them.

"Generally, patients are not being given concrete advice about exercise to help them maintain functionality and to improve their outcomes," Dr. Cheville says.

Exercise can improve patients' mobility, enable them to enjoy activities and keep them from becoming isolated in their homes. It can contribute to overall feelings of strength and physical safety, ease cancer-related fatigue and improve sleep. The researchers plan to investigate how to make the message about exercise meaningful to patients to optimize symptom relief and enhance recovery.

The study was funded by a grant from the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Other authors include Ann Marie Dose, Ph.D.; Jeffrey Basford, M.D.; Ph.D., and Lori Rhudy, Ph.D.; all of Mayo Clinic.
