Geographic allegiances are no longer limited to college football and rap. YouGov's InvestorView has found there are pitched battles among smartphone owners when it comes to their favorite operating system. Apple's iOS wins the western region of the US, with 48% share among smartphone owners, while Google's Android wins the rest of the country.
Blackberry continues to remain popular among Northeasterns - the location where the brand used to be the standard device for financial services professionals prior to the launch of the iPhone and Android. It maintains a 20% share and a competitive presence in the Northeast. Blackberry, however, has not been able to gain ground elsewhere in the US, coming in a very distant third in every other region of the country.
Given the geographic pressure on Blackberry, we expect its fortunes and market share will continue to fall as smartphone ownership increases across the rest of the country. ?For Apple to continue its success, we believe it will have to make more in-roads among consumers in the rest of the country.
Methodology:
Data from YouGov's InvestorView Telecom survey, conducted from March 1-May 31. 753 self-identified smartphone owners were interviewed during this period. ?
