There?s a Silver Lining for Sands China in Macau

A positive outlook for the mass segment in the world?s largest gaming market, Macau, could be the silver lining for the shares of Hong-Kong listed Sands China, which hit a seven-month low late last week after its parent company, Las Vegas Sands, reported second-quarter earnings that were? worse than expected, analysts told CNBC.

Sandscotaicentral.com

Sands Cotai Central

?This is a segment (mass-market) that continues to grow and is profitable, so that?s why we love shares in both Las Vegas Sands [LVS? Loading...? ? ? () ? ] and Sands China [1928.HK? Loading...? ? ? () ? ] at these levels,? said Grant Govertsen, Partner & Analyst at Union Gaming Research.

Shares of gaming operators in Macau have taken a hit from the weaker outlook for revenue growth as China?s economy slows. Sands China shares are down about 30 percent from a peak hit in mid-April, while Hong-Kong listed rivals, Wynn Macau, a unit of U.S. gaming company Wynn Resorts, and SJM Holdings, founded by Hong Kong billionaire Stanley Ho, have fallen around 38 percent and 24 percent, respectively in the last three months.

Las Vegas Sands reported last week that net income at its Macau unit, Sands China, fell 40 percent year-on-year to $160.5 million in the second quarter because of higher-than-expected opening expenses at Cotai Central, the new Sands? Macau casino that opened in April, and on a $1.01 billion impairment charge on two land parcels.

?We?re not worried about the Las Vegas Sands results. If you look at Macau there?s no other casino that can touch them in terms of what they have to offer the mass market,? said Govertsen.

He adds that Sands China is better positioned than its competitors like SJM to tap the middle class visitors especially from China given the expected growth in the number of hotel rooms, slot machines and table games that it operates directly.

Sands China shares gained some lost ground on Monday, climbing almost 6 percent to HK$23.15 ($2.98). CLSA?s Analyst Richard Huang says Sands China is his top pick among Macau gaming stocks. He said CLSA has a buy recommendation on the stock with a target price of HK$33.3.

?Mass market gaming revenue growth has remained robust. The mass gaming segment is also the high-profit margin segment with an Ebitda margin at around 40 percent (versus a VIP gaming Ebitda margin of around 10 percent). And Sands China is the company with the highest exposure to the mass market,? Huang said.

According to Fitch Ratings, The VIP segment makes up slightly more than 70 percent of the overall market in Macau and over the last several years has grown faster than the mass market.

?However, we expect that to change over the next several years, with faster growth occurring in the mass market. The mass market will likely make up an increasingly larger portion of the market, as the next wave of supply growth starts to come on line in 2015-2016,? Fitch said in a report published last week.

Fitch Ratings last week revised down its 2012 Macau revenue growth forecast to 10-12 percent from 15 percent earlier to reflect a more cautious view in terms of the impact a slowdown in China will have in the near-term.

Macau gaming revenues grew 42 percent in 2011 and 58 percent in 2010, according to Fitch.

No Canada for Missy 'The Missile' Franklin at Olympics

LONDON - This could have been the greatest swimming Olympics for Canada in 28 years: The best since Alex Baumann and Victor Davis flexed their muscles and their medals in Los Angeles in 1984.

All Missy Franklin had to do was say yes.

She had the opportunity. Her Canadian parents asked her to choose. They even suggested it might be the less pressured way to go, swimming in the Canadian trials instead of the soap opera that can be U.S. Olympic trials.

But the kid with the dual citizenship from suburban Denver, who just turned 17, the teenager some are calling the female Michael Phelps, said she would rather do it the American way.

Think you know how to improve Canada's showing at the Summer Olympics? Send out a tweet with the hashtag #canadafail

Her high-achieving parents weren?t so certain. Her father Dick, born in St. Catharines, the former all-Canadian from Saint Mary?s University in Halifax, an offensive lineman good enough to play one exhibition game with the Toronto Argonauts before blowing out his knee, actually thought it might be best for his daughter to get away from the American pressures and swim in the Olympics for Canada. Dick went back to university to get his MBA at Dalhousie, where he met his future wife, the medical student, D.A. The doctor and the MBA got married, and while working for 7Up in Ontario, Dick was transferred to the U.S. After several stops with major companies, the family settled in Denver, where Dick had a senior position with the Coors? Brewing Company. And more than 20 years into their relationship, Missy was born.

The swimmer they allowed to choose the country of choice for these Games ? and for all future competitions ? even if she was only 16 at the time. Sixteen going on 25. A 16-year-old who adores her parents (and that?s unusual by itself).

?Whenever any of this gets overwhelming,? said Franklin, ?they sit me down and say they?re proud of me and they love me. They?ve been perfect. Absolutely perfect.?

And to add to the Canadian content in her life, Missy?s favourite place in the world just happens to be her aunt?s cottage in picturesque Pictou, Nova Scotia, where she will be able to show off her Olympic medals later in the summer. Her aunt, Dr. Cathy Campbell ? you can?t make these kind of connections up ? happens to be the team physician for Canada?s women?s soccer team here at the Olympics. And when the doctor learned there was a staff meeting Monday night at the time of Franklin?s race, she said she would only attend if they had a television that would enable her to watch the race from the Aquatics Centre.

?It was unbelievable, just unbelievable,? said Campbell, the Toronto physician, brought up by her sister D.A., on the phone post-race, ?I, of course, starting sobbing and had to get myself together for the rest of the meeting.

?That smile on her face at the end of the race, I?ll never forget that for the rest of the my life. What a smile.?

It wasn?t just a gold-medal win for Franklin. It was a statement of arrival. In a deep field in the 100-metre backstroke final. Franklin didn?t simply win the race. She beat her opponents and beat up on conventional wisdom.

Fifteen minutes before her gold-medal race, she swam in a heat for the 100-metre freestyle event. Critics thought she was crazy to race both in the same night. ?I don?t know where these girls get their energy from,? said Phelps, the swimmer to whom she is most often compared.

?D.A. and I were sick about her swimming the double on the same night,? said Dr. Campbell. ?We thought she was asking too much of herself. We didn?t think she could do it. But she did it at the U.S. trials. She?s an amazing kid. She?s smart enough to know how to preserve energy in a heat and come back to win a gold. Unbelievable.?

And now young Franklin has a gold and a bronze medal in two Olympic finals ? with three more possibilities to come for the 6-foot-1 teen with a smile almost as wide as her height.

The kind of athlete, intelligent, accomplished, humble, that would be the perfect Canadian role model. The kind of high accomplishing female athlete this country needs. They call her Missy The Missile. She wants no part of the nickname.

?I?m just an all-around happy girl who loves everything about her life,? she said.

And sadly, with a Canadian passport but not a uniform, with two Canadian parents, we could have called her ours.

Selling or Refinancing Your Marital Home During Divorce - blog*spot

This is the second contribution from local mortgage professional and licensed realtor Natalie DeLeo. ?In this guest post, Natalie points out three things to consider when you are selling or refinancing your marital home in the divorce context.

1. ?How do the terms "upside down" or "underwater" play into your decisions relative to your marital home?

Lower property values can affect your decision on what to do about your martial home. ?For many people, the marital home is the largest asset they own. ?Most couples cannot afford to own and operate two households: the soon-to-be former marital home, plus another home that one spouse moves into during the separation process that is divorce.

If the value of your marital home is less than the mortgage that is owed on it, selling the home will, in many circumstances, take much longer than a standard sale. ?This is because you are in a ?short sale? position. ?Sometimes, short sales can take up to one year to obtain the necessary approvals from the mortgage lender; a second mortgage further complicates [and delays] the process. ?

You could be in the marital home longer than you think. ?Therefore, it is imperative that you plan to maintain the marital home as long as necessary to preserve the value. ?If you find yourself in this situation, you need to hire a realtor that is a short sale real estate expert to broker your sale.?

If you or your soon-to-be-ex-spouse are not selling the home, then how do you must determine the equity or value of the home in this down market. ?With home values bottoming out, there is less equity to distribute between the spouses. Sometimes debt is apportioned rather than equity being divided.

Some couples have considered maintaining a joint ownership of the home post-divorce [i.e. ownership as tenants in common, without rights of survivorship]. ?Their hope is that the real estate market will significantly rebound someday and both spouses can share in the net proceeds from the sale of the former marital home. ?Check with your divorce lawyer about protecting your interest should you both decide to retain the marital home.

The mortgage economic crisis also has made it more difficult to refinance a mortgage to make payments more affordable for the spouse retaining a marital home. There are only two ways to remove a spouse from the liability of the martial home.

  • Sell the home if it is not upside down.
  • Refinance the home into the spouse?s name that is retaining the home.

Most homes in an "underwater" or "upside down" position will not have an available refinance option. ?Contact a mortgage professional to find out about all the refinance plans to determine whether you qualify for any. ?When doing so, be prepared to disclose whether you will be receiving [or paying alimony] or whether you can take advantage of a co-signor to get the deal done.

2. ?What to consider when selling the marital home.

If you have determined that your home is not upside down and there is equity then you will have to have a licensed real estate appraiser determine the current value of home. There are many different formulas to determine the value of your home. ?Ask your divorce lawyer for an explanation and a referral to get your home appraised. ?

Each appraiser has their own opinion of what your home is worth; these opinions could be quite disparate. Your attorney will guide you through the process of how the home will be sold and assets distributed. Your realtor can help market the home so that you can get the best price for the current market. ?

Your divorce attorney will have input about how to determine the value of the marital real estate; how the property will be marketed; and the timeline of a potential sale. ?The goal in each case is to solicit a viable offer and to process the offer so that the home can be sold and closed in a manner that makes sense within the divorce framework. ?

3. ?Potential Problems when refinancing your Marital Home.

In the divorce context, the biggest problems arise when one spouse receives the home and agrees to refinance to remove the other spouse's name from the mortgage note. ?In these tough economic times, couples are faced with: the lower average home values and tightened guidelines to qualify for a refinance transaction. ?Sometimes, no matter how hard a spouse tries to refinance the home, they find they simply cannot close the deal. ?

The spouse vacating the marital home is often required to execute a quit claim deed in favor of the spouse who receives the home. ?Keep in mind when executing a deed that transfers 100% of your interest that it may be impossible for your former spouse to refinance. ?

Or worse, we have seen where the spouse who remains in the home stops paying the mortgage and the home goes into foreclosure, with the missed payments and foreclosure proceedings appearing on the innocent spouse's credit report. Keep this in mind when making decisions relative to the marital home in your divorce proceeding.

If possible, get the issues worked out before the divorce is complete. ?At least know that the spouse who is trying to refinance is a qualified candidate for the mortgage and has secured pre-approved before the judgment of divorce is executed. ?Your divorce lawyer can put stipulations that the closing and disbursement can take place within so many [weeks or months] of the entry of your judgment of divorce.

The key is to prepare and think through all the options first, then direct your attorney to go out and negotiate your interests. Understanding and working through your particular situation and creating a plan with your attorney and his experts will give you peace of mind.?

Granderson misplays ball that could have been caught in 8-6 victory for Boston

Yankees center fielder?Curtis Granderson can't catch a ball hit by Pedro Ciriaco during the ninth inning.

By RONALD BLUM

updated 12:54 a.m. ET July 29, 2012

NEW YORK - Boston had wasted a five-run lead by the time Pedro Ciriaco stepped to the plate in the ninth inning Saturday night and hit a hard fly ball toward center field. He thought Curtis Granderson would catch it.

Then Granderson went in on the ball and sprinted back in an attempt to catch up.

"I thought I had a chance," Ciriaco said, "so I run like a hurricane."

The ball landed for a go-ahead triple as Granderson fell, and the Red Sox came away with a dramatic 8-6 win over the New York Yankees after Vicente Padilla allowed a tying, two-run homer in the eighth to nemesis Mark Teixeira.

Adrian Gonzalez had four RBIs for the Red Sox, who built a 6-1 lead for Jon Lester.

"We were good tonight, and we were lucky," Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said. "He hit that ball, a knuckleball, 380 feet. It's tough to catch. He's pretty hot right now, so I'd say he was good and we were lucky."

A three-time All-Star, Granderson had expected to make the catch.

"I didn't think it was hit as hard as it was," he said. "And, by the time I tried to get back on it, I couldn't get enough steam to get back to it."

Jacoby Ellsbury's one-out walk off Rafael Soriano (2-1) preceded the hit by Ciriaco, who boosted the lead to two runs when he scored on Dustin Pedroia's sacrifice fly.

Playing designated hitter while David Ortiz is on the disabled list, the 26-year-old Ciriaco had three hits to raise his average to .356 in 59 at-bats. He also had the go-ahead hit in Boston's only other win over the Yankees in eight tries this year, a two-run double off Phil Hughes in the second game of a doubleheader at Fenway Park on July 7.

"He just comes in and plays, has good at-bats, runs the bases well," Valentine said. "Makes us a better team."

It was Granderson's second fielding flub against the Red Sox. In that July 7 game, the Yankees were ahead 3-1 when Granderson called for Daniel Nava's fly ball and allowed it to bounce off his glove as right fielder Darnell McDonald moved past him. Granderson initially was charged with an error, but the official scorer later changed it to McDonald's.

"We haven't seen much of that, him getting turned around like that," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "But it just shows that it's part of the game and sometimes players are going to have the wrong read on balls. It's going to happen in the course of the season, and it won't be the last one, I'm sure."

Andrew Miller (3-1) got one out for the win, and Alfredo Aceves finished for his 22nd save in 26 chances.

New York started to erase its early deficit in the fifth, when Jayson Nix hit a two-run homer and Derek Jeter had an RBI grounder. Then came another matchup of Padilla and Teixeira, who have been jawing at each other from a distance.

Padilla allowed a leadoff single to pinch-hitter Raul Ibanez in the eighth, then threw a called third strike past Jeter. Granderson hit two foul drives deep down the right-field line, the second missing a home run by about a foot, before striking out.

Padilla fell behind 2-0 in the count to Teixeira, then lobbed in a 51 mph curveball for a called strike. Teixeira turned on the next pitch, sending it deep into the right-field bleachers. He stared at the ball as he took four short steps up the line, then went into his home run trot.

Padilla wouldn't discuss anything with media. As reporters approached him in the locker room, he said: "About what? One bad day?" turned and walked out.

Teixeira hit a go-ahead, two-run triple off Padilla in the seventh inning at Fenway Park on July 6, sparking a weekend war of words. Padilla accused Teixeira of wronging Latino teammates when they played together on the Texas Rangers in 2006-07, and Teixeira said Padilla threw at hitters and "didn't have a lot of friends in the game." Padilla responded Teixeira would "be better off playing a women's sport."

Teixeira said he's been trying to put the tiff behind.

"Emotion is part of the game, but if you let the emotions get the best of you, especially as a hitter, you swing too hard or you swing at pitches over your head, that does you no good," he said.

Following a rain delay of 2 hours, 4 minutes, Gonzalez hit an RBI double and scored on Will Middlebrook's two-run double in the first, then hit a three-run homer off CC Sabathia in the fifth.

Chris Stewart's first home run since September cut the gap to 3-1 in the third, but Gonzalez boosted the lead with two outs in the fifth when he lined a home run into the right-field bleachers. Gonzalez leads the majors in batting average with runners in scoring position at .418 (41 for 98).

New Yankees right fielder Ichiro Suzuki raced into the right-center gap to rob Gonzalez of an extra-base hit with a catch just in front of the warning track in the seventh.

Lester, who had been 0-3 with a 10.42 ERA in his previous four starts, allowed four runs and four hits in six innings and watched his bullpen blow a lead he left with for the fifth time. He fanned Robinson Cano in the sixth for his 1,000th strikeout.

"We needed to win that game," Lester said. "Guys came back and kept fighting. That was big for us."

Notes: Valentine caused a stir before the game when he said the Red Sox medical staff instructed him not to play LF Carl Crawford four days in a row, a mandate Valentine said he ignored earlier in the month after the left fielder came off the DL. ... Former Red Sox manager Terry Francona visited with Boston players before the game in the Red Sox clubhouse, preparing for his job as a broadcaster for Sunday night's game on ESPN. ... Sabathia gave up a season-high six runs and eight hits in six innings.

NASA's $2.5 billion Mars rover faces tricky landing (+video)

The one-ton Curiosity Mars rover is designed arrive on Mars using a supersonic parachute and a first-of-its-kind 'sky crane,' in what experts are calling a risky maneuver.

It won't be easy. The complicated touchdown NASA designed for the Curiosity rover is so risky it's been described as "seven minutes of terror" ? the time it takes to go from 13,000 mph (20,920 kph) to a complete stop.

Scientists and engineers will be waiting anxiously as the spacecraft plunges through?Mars' thin atmosphere and, in a new twist, attempts to slowly lower the rover to the bottom of a crater with cables.

Scientists on Earth won't know for 14 minutes whether Curiosity?lands?safely as radio signals from?Mars?travel to Earth.

If it succeeds, a video camera aboard the rover will have captured the most dramatic minutes for the first filming of a?landing on another planet.

"It would be a major technological step forward if it works. It's a big gamble," said American University space policy analyst Howard McCurdy.

The future direction of?Mars?exploration is hanging on the outcome of this $2.5 billion science project to determine whether the environment was once suitable for microbes to live. Previous missions have found ice and signs that water once flowed. Curiosity will drill into rocks and soil in search of carbon and other elements.

Named for the Roman god of war,?Mars?is an unforgiving planet with a hostile history of swallowing man-made spacecraft. It's tough to fly there and even tougher to touch down. More than half of humanity's attempts to?land?on?Mars?have ended in disaster. Only the U.S. has tasted success.

"You've done everything that you can think of to ensure mission success, but?Mars?can still throw you a curve," said former NASA?Mars?czar Scott Hubbard, who now teaches at Stanford University.

The Mini Cooper-sized spacecraft traveled eight and a half months to reach?Mars. In a sort of celestial acrobatics, Curiosity will twist, turn and perform other maneuvers throughout the seven-minute thrill ride to the surface.

Why is NASA attempting such a daredevil move? It had little choice. Earlier spacecraft dropped to the Martian surface like a rock, swaddled in airbags, and bounced to a stop. Such was the case with the much smaller and lighter rovers Spirit and Opportunity in 2004.

At nearly a ton, Curiosity is too heavy, so engineers had to come up with a new way to?land. Friction from the thin atmosphere isn't enough to slow down the spacecraft without some help.

During its fiery plunge, Curiosity brakes by executing a series of S-curves ? similar to how the space shuttle re-entered Earth's atmosphere. At 900 mph (1,450 kph), it unfurls its huge parachute. It then sheds the heat shield that took the brunt of the atmospheric friction and switches on its ground-sensing radar.

Curiosity then jettisons the parachute and fires up its rocket-powered backpack to slow it down until it hovers. Cables unspool from the backpack and slowly lower the rover ? at less than 2 mph (3.2 kph). The cables keep the rocket engines from getting too close and kicking up dust.

Once the rover senses touchdown, the cords are cut.

Even if the intricate choreography goes according to script, a freak dust storm, sudden gust of wind or other problem can?marthe?landing.

"The degree of difficulty is above a 10," said Adam Steltzner, an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the mission.

The rover's?landing?target is Gale Crater near the Martian equator. Scientists know Gale was once waterlogged. Images from space reveal mineral signatures of clays and sulfate salts, which form in the presence of water, in older layers near the bottom of the mountain.

During its two-year exploration, the plutonium-powered Curiosity will climb the lower mountain flanks to probe the deposits. As sophisticated as the rover is, it cannot search for life. Instead, it carries a toolbox including a power drill, rock-zapping laser and mobile chemistry lab to sniff for organic compounds, considered the chemical building blocks of life. It also has cameras to take panoramic photos.

Humans have been mesmerized by?Mars?since the 19th century when American astronomer Percival Lowell, peering through a telescope, theorized that intelligent beings carved what looked like irrigation canals. Scientists now think that if life existed onMars?? a big if ? it would be in the form of microbes.

Curiosity will explore whether the crater ever had the right environment for microorganisms to take hold.

The Shocking Truth About Recovery From Bipolar Disorder | Diet ...

www.bipolaradvantage.com The current standard of care as defined by the National Institute of Mental Health is to minimize symptoms and accept the high probability of relapse. While many tools have been developed to effectively manage bipolar disorder, there are far too many people who are still living on the edge of relapse and suffering greatly from it. Even for those who achieve a level of remission that is commonly called recovery, they live in constant fear that one sleepless night can send them into another crisis. Trapped in a vicious cycle of Crisis, Managed, Recovery, and Relapse is the very definition of bipolar disorder and its depressive counterpart unipolar disorder. Even in Recovery, the illness is lurking behind every thought, waiting for the slightest chance to trigger a new episode. It consigns its victims to a lifetime of fear and constant vigilance in an attempt to keep the flow of energy and information at bay. It is interesting that so many people have a different word than ?recovery? for the state where we are limited to the comfort zone of no high or low symptoms. They do not call it ?recovery,? they call it ?bored.? It is one of the major reasons that they slip back into the Managed Stage and risk another Crisis. This is why the National Institute of Mental Health says, ?in spite of modern, evidence-based treatment, bipolar disorder remains a highly recurrent, predominantly depressive illness.? The conclusion to this video is at http

Police continue to monitor the area around the Century 16 theater, Saturday, July 28, 2012 in Aurora, Colo. Twelve people were killed and over 50 wounded in a shooting attack on July 20, at the packed theater during a showing of the Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises." Police have identified the suspected shooter as James Holmes, 24. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

(AP) ? The Colorado movie theater complex that was the scene of a gunman's massacre this month didn't have any uniformed security guards on duty the night of the shooting, even though other theaters operated by the same company did provide such protection for the busy premiere of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises."

It's impossible to know whether guards ? often off-duty police officers ? at the Aurora Century 16 would have spotted the suspected gunman, James Holmes, and thwarted the attack that left 12 moviegoers dead and dozens wounded on July 20.

Officers hired as guards are generally armed and usually spend their time roaming the complex, checking bags or dealing with minor disputes.

Cinemark provided off-duty police guards at the Aurora theater on busy Friday and Saturday nights. As for other nights of the week, theater operators decide on a case-by-case basis whether to hire security, depending on the likelihood of trouble. The attack came early Friday, shortly after the midnight screening of the Batman film began.

Larry Lowak, whose son Brent was among the wounded, said security personnel on the scene possibly could have stopped the gunman, and he was dismayed to learn that guards weren't on hand.

"If you bring in security on Friday or Saturday, you sure as hell want to bring it in for this particular function," Lowak said.

Plano, Texas-based Cinemark, which operates the Aurora theater, declined to explain why guards weren't provided in Aurora that night and declined to discuss safety policies in general.

Through interviews with police officers and officials outside the theater company, The Associated Press was able to identify places around the country that did use armed security workers for the July 19-20 Batman showings ? including places like Beaumont, Texas; Lake Charles, La., and Tupelo, Miss.

Some other locations, including a Cinema Century 16 theater in the western Denver suburb of Lakewood, did not have security.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates has said that the Cinemark in Aurora normally uses off-duty officers to provide security on weekend nights but did not have any working for the July 19 showings that went into the next morning. The theater does not have an unusually high record of complaints or crimes, police Sgt. Cassidee Carlson said.

In Moosic, Pa., Cinemark has worked for years with off-duty officers from the local police department ? typically on Fridays and Saturdays ? and authorities said they were asked to provide two officers on July 19 because the midnight showing was likely to be a major event.

"If they're expecting large crowds, they call our department for additional police presence," said Moosic Borough Police Officer James Giehl.

Two major multiplexes in Amarillo, Texas, including one Cinemark facility, also ensured that off-duty uniformed police officers were present for the first screenings of the Batman film. Amarillo Police Cpl. Jerry Neufeld said that the off-duty officers work in pairs; the town's theaters made a point of asking for them on the busy opening night.

There were no incidents at the screenings, and Neufeld said he heard that people were, as always, happy to see people there to deal with any dangers.

"When they're there, they're visible, people see them and people come in and say, 'hey man, we're glad you're here,'" Neufeld said. "It gives people a sense of calm."

The Aurora shooting has stirred discussion about appropriate security precautions at gathering places commonly considered safe from the cares and worries of the outside world. Experts say that security at public venues has increased substantially over the past decade, but they also note that it's impossible to maintain perfect safety at all times.

Officials have said the Aurora shooting suspect bought a ticket to the midnight showing and went into the theater as part of the crowd. A federal law enforcement official said suspect Holmes is believed to have propped open an exit door in the theater as the movie was playing, donned protective ballistic gear, re-entered about a half-hour into the film and opened fire.

Aurora police said the suspect tossed two gas canisters into the crowd and had an AR-15 assault rifle, a shotgun, and two .40-caliber Glock handguns.

Some theaters have added security guards for all nights of the week since the shooting, and police departments around the country have also conducted extra patrols that focus to movie theaters, though it's not clear if those shifts will be permanent. AMC Theatres has barred people from wearing masks or bringing fake weapons inside its buildings.

Many theaters, including the Cinemark in Aurora, prohibit patrons from bringing in their concealed weapons they use for personal protection.

That irks people like Dudley Brown, executive director of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, who said that he has refused to go to Aurora theater because of that ban.

"What could have stopped this is law-abiding citizens being allowed to carry," Brown insisted.

Lowak, the father of the shooting survivor, also said he believes people carrying concealed weapons might have helped limit the bloodshed.

But Hubert Williams, former head of the Newark police department and president of the Police Foundation, said that the idea that average citizens with guns could keep a theater safe only makes sense "on a piece of paper."

"Reality is much more complicated. What if you pull a gun out, take aim and someone else thinks you're the shooter?" he asked. "Would you stand up against an AR-15, AK-47 military-style assault weapon? Give me a break."

RBC Life Assessment- A Better Check at RBC Life's Prospect | Arty Apt

RBC Life is a wellness company headquartered from Irving, Texas. For the last two decades, the company has focused on providing dermatological solutions utilizing aloe. They also provide a multilevel marketing opportunity for their products to interested representatives.

This is a brief review of the company ? who they?re, what they do, and whether this could be a potentially lucrative opportunity or not.

The Company

RBC Life provides nutritional supplements and body maintenance systems. Over 20 years ago, in the 1980?s, founder Clinton Howard began taking a look at the health benefits of aloe ? a plant that?s been used for centuries to cure such things as common sunburns, amongst others.

Howard formed a group to isolate the active component in aloe, and then put that ingredient in a number of skincare and health items. It took four many years, and $20 million dollars to get the proper information, but the company now sells a type of over 75 products that are based around that research.

This company is a bit different from others in health and wellness because of their accreditations. Most network marketing companies that offer a kind of wellness solution are based on minerals and vitamins that haven?t been scientifically proven to ?cure? anything ? rather, they are just good for overall wellness. RBC Life belongs to accreditation organizations such as the BBB, has Certified Organic items, and Vegan Certified as well.

The RBC Life Opportunity

There are 3 ways to purchase RBC Life?s items. First, they will take on retail customers straight using their website. Then, there are ?Preferred Customers? who can get 10-20% off of retail price just by signing up, and applying for auto-ship providers. Finally, there are ?Associates? that are people interested in joining the MLM opportunity. Associates get all items at wholesale price (20% off of retail) and obtain access to the back office (free for that first year, $7. 95 per month after that) and lots of other bonuses typically given in these types of opportunities ? bonuses, trips, expense accounts, etc.

Is RBC Life For A person?

RBC Life offers higher quality products than a number of other network marketing opportunities. They have a large amount of accreditations, and although their items are spread out amongst a range of cures (healthy residing, anti aging, energy and fitness, specific needs) they appear to be legitimate. One big complaint using the company, though, is the fact which their commission rate is so low ? meaning their own wholesale prices are excessive. Reps have to sell a lot of volume to do nicely.

At the end from the day, though, the most important thing for new reps to know is that you have to know how to marketplace products like these before you start in on an chance.

Most people begin through leveraging their ?warm market? and contacting family and friends to join in on the great opportunity. But that?s the wrong way to go about it ? this warm market will fizzle, and reps are generally left frustrated.

It?s crucial to learn how to use the internet to begin building downlines and really earning money from opportunities like RBC Life. Luckily, there are many places to learn and start building your company toolkit for RBC Life success.

PSYCHED AMERICAN

U.S. freestyle wrestler Jake Herbert is the team's resident jokester and could barely keep a straight face during a press conference on Saturday. But when asked how he flips the switch just before a match, he gave great insight into the mental approach of athletes competing in one of the world's roughest sports.

"You start to look at that guy across the mat and you start to think of what he's trying to take away from you (and think) 'He didn't work as hard as me. I know for a fact he wasn't up at 6 a.m., he wasn't hitting the bike until he puked. He wasn't hitting the weights as hard as me. He wasn't as dedicated as I am. He doesn't want it as much as I do.' And it starts that excitement. It starts getting my blood pressure going. It starts getting the hairs standing on the back of my neck."

Upon hearing Herbert's rant, teammate Sam Hazewinkel responded "I ready to go, man. Whew!"

Herbert and Hazewinkel will have to calm down though. The freestyle wrestling competition doesn't start until Aug. 10.

There is nothing more important than the Olympics, right? How about a wedding?

Croatian women's basketball player Marija Vrsaljko skipped last week's exhibition game against the United States to get married.

The Americans pounded Croatia by 54 points in the game.

Having the lanky center back in the lineup is making a difference in the opener. She has eight points early in the third quarter and Croatia trails by just four points.

HOW MUCH?!

Day One in the Olympic Park and already visitors are feeling it in their wallets.

"Twenty-five pounds for a T-shirt!" exclaimed Catherine Goley of Birmingham, who was browsing through a London 2012 souvenir shop ? and made a hasty exit after finding nothing in her price range.

She had tickets for Saturday night's swim competition, but others without tickets came to the park just to check it out, paying 10 pounds ($15) to get in and another 15 pounds ($22) to go up the Orbit observation deck.

Colleen Whalen, of Cincinnati, Ohio, said she would have paid to go up since that's the only way to see inside the main stadium and the Olympic flame, but tickets were sold out.

Whalen, who won a ticket to the swim finals, said she briefly considered buying a ticket for the opening ceremony, but balked at the price for the remaining seats.

"The only tickets left were 1800 or 2300 pounds and yes, that's definitely out of my price range." (In dollars, that's a cool $2,800 to $3,570).

Brazilian rower Kissya da Costa has put her modeling career on hold to pursue her dream of Olympic gold at the London Games.

The 30-year-old, who advanced to the quarterfinals of the women's single sculls on Saturday with a fourth-place finish in her heat, says she hasn't posed in front of the cameras for two years because of the demands of her sport.

"I don't miss modeling," she told The Associated Press. "In Brazil, it doesn't earn you much money."

She now divides her time between rowing and studying nutrition at university, where she still has two years left in her degree.

From the Ludacris and Ice Cube blaring on the speakers to the cheerleaders and hype man who fills the breaks in the action, the presentation of basketball in London has a decidedly American feel.

SWEDISH STEEL

The bar used in the Olympic weightlifting competition is made of Swedish steel built to withstand 1.5 tons without snapping or losing its shape. That's four times more weight than the strongest competitors can lift.

The elasticity of the bar allows it to bend back into shape after each lift, says Erik Blomberg, CEO of Eleiko, the supplier of the weightlifting equipment used in London.

The plates consist of a steel hub coated with rubber. The firmness of the rubber is key, once the lifter lets go of the bar. "Not too soft so that it bounces out of control. And not too hard so that it damages the platform," says Bloomberg.

SYRIA'S BALANCING ACT

He's in a delicate position for sure.

The head of Syria's Olympic team at the London Games is choosing his words carefully to describe the ambitions of the country's athletes and the government, whose forces are bombarding his home city of Aleppo.

Maher Khayata said he was worried about his family, trapped in Aleppo during one of the most significant battles of the 17-month uprising in Syria. But he said the army is trying to "protect people and keep them safe."

Three Syrian athletes were competing on the first full day of competition in swimming, shooting and boxing Saturday. Back home, the army pounded Aleppo by helicopters to flush out rebels.

"There are two sides of the dispute," Khayata said. "One of them is fighting to seek power and the other side wants to keep the security of the country."

"I am a sportsman, not a politician. Everyone knows there are armed people and the army that is trying to protect people and keep them safe."

SLAPSTICK MISHAP

And now for something completely different.

It was bound to happen in the land of Monty Python and Mr. Bean: We've just had our first slapstick comedy-related mishap of the London Games.

The beach volleyball venue at Horse Guards Parade has been playing the "Benny Hill" theme over the loudspeaker while the raking crew smooths out the sand during timeouts. That inspired a couple of fans to mimic the show ? in short, to start running around the concourse between the upper and lower sections, chasing and being chased by a pair of blondes in skirts.

The crowd loved it, and the P.A. announcer also egged them on, until one of the blokes ran smack-dab into an Olympic volunteer.

The crowd gasped.

The two quickly hugged it off and went back to their respective duties: She resumed directing fans to their seats and he headed for the beer concession.

The volunteer, who declined to give her name, said she was uninjured. The fan, who said to identify him and his mate as "The Murray Brothers," seemed more concerned about spilling some of his beer.

The Associated Press has learned exclusively that it was not his first of the day.

So, no crisis here. Until a giant cartoon foot comes out of the sky and stomps out the venue, that is.

QUEEN'S STUNTMAN

Gary Connery has completed more than 880 sky dives in his career as a stuntman ? but never dressed as a woman.

He donned a dress and silver wig as Queen Elizabeth II, while his colleague Mark Sutton doubled for James Bond actor Daniel Craig, as the pair leaped Friday night from a helicopter above Olympic Park as part of the big surprise in the four-hour opening ceremony.

"Love the dress, will see if I can keep it," Connery tweeted after landing on a narrow bridge beside the stadium, a stunt he and Sutton had been training for months to do.

Connery's no slouch as a stuntman. Earlier this year he jumped 2,400 feet (730 meters) from a helicopter and landed ? without using any parachute at all. Instead he used a carpet of 18,600 cardboard boxes to break his fall.

STAG DO

A rowing regatta isn't the usual place to start a bachelor party.

It worked out just fine for husband-to-be Martin Stanning, though, as he watched sister Heather romp to victory in the women's pair with partner Helen Glover at Dorney Lake? setting a Olympic best time in the process.

Martin was under orders in the "stag do" ? as it's called in Britain ? from his older brother Alistair, who was organizer-in-chief. His parents were there, too.

Glover and Stanning are big favorites to win the final of the women's pair on Wednesday after going through this season unbeaten. If they win gold, they'll become the first British women to do so.

Poll: Half of Americans do not know the president's religion

Three and a half years into President Obama's first term as president, half of Americans cannot accurately say what religion he is, according to a poll released this week.

Only 49 percent of respondents said that Obama was Christian while 17 percent inaccurately said he was Muslim. Nearly one-third of respondents said they did not know the president's religion, according to the poll released Thursday by the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life.

More people - 60 percent - knew that Romney, who has not held elected office in a decade, was Mormon than knew which religion the sitting president subscribes to.

And while only 9 percent of respondents said Romney was a religion that he is not, more than twice that amount said Obama adheres to a religion other than Christianity. The vast majority of those claiming Obama is not a Christian said he was a Muslim.

Nearly one in three Republicans said Obama was Muslim, twice as many as in 2008, the Pew study shows.

"Unfortunately there has been a development of a bizarre echo chamber within right wing of the political spectrum that truth and reality have failed to penetrate," said Ibrahim Hooper, communications director at Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Washington-based Muslim civil rights and advocacy group. "It's a self-perpetuating, self-reinforcing delusion."

But this seemingly large lack of basic knowledge about the president may have more to do with people's opinion of Obama than how much they know about religious beliefs, said Alan Cooperman, associate director for research at the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.

"It's entirely possible that what people are telling us isn't exactly what they know but they are expressing an opinion," Cooperman said. "We suspect - it's hard to prove it- that some of the people who tell us that the president is a Muslim are using the question as a way to express their distrust or dislike for the president."

Only 8 percent of Democrats said Obama was Muslim. Because there is such a wide divide between the parties' responses, Cooperman said the results do not "just show whether people are ignorant on the president's religion but more that they have an opinion on his religion."

The percentage of people who said Obama was Muslim has stayed fairly steady since August 2010, when firestorm erupted over plans to build an Islamic community center two blocks from Ground Zero in New York City.

Hooper said that while the tension between Muslims and Christians has not been as public since the " Ground Zero Mosque " controversy, he has seen "a steady erosion of tolerance and mutual understanding based on this relentless campaign of Islamophobia" since Obama was elected.

"It is visceral hatred for President Obama and to justify it they have to come up with these reasons: he is the other, he's Muslim, he's foreign born."

But as of now, a candidate's religion will not likely be the driving factor for whether people pick Obama or Romney in November.

Even though 65 percent of those who think Obama is Muslim said they were uncomfortable with his religion, most of them also said they already planned to vote for Romney. And among voters who knew Romney was Mormon, 80 percent either said his faith did not make them uncomfortable or that it did not matter.

"I'm not going to say it doesn't matter at all," Cooperman said, but it "doesn't seem to have a lot of impact on their voting preference."
