There's a whole lotta chirping going on: Twitter chief executive Dick Costolo said users of the short-messaging blog are sending 250 million tweets a day.

Twitter reached the 100 million active-user mark last month. Of those users, 50 percent log into Twitter daily, Costolo said at the Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco.

That's up from 30 percent at the beginning of the year, he said.

With Twitter now integrated in Apple's latest mobile operating system, iOS 5, Twitter's user numbers are also accelerating.

New Twitter signups increased by three times last Thursday, when iOS 5 became available, Costolo said.

"iOS was absolutely huge for us," he said in remarks shared in the Business Insider. "We all anticipated it'd be big, but the integration is so native and feels so frictionless ... it was even better than we thought it was."

The change means you can tweet directly from your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad using Apple apps like the Camera, Maps and Safari, as well as from popular third-party apps like Instagram and LivingSocial.

You can also upload images directly to Twitter from your device.

Unlike Facebook, which changes more than a diaper-wearing baby, Twitter plans to remain simple and clear-cut, with its 140-character limit on messages, Costolo said.

That's one reason, he said, Twitter and Apple make good partners ? both companies feel simplicity is crucial to their users' success and their own.
