Custom Millwork Video

Custom Millwork Video

This custom millwork video talks about the types of materials used for turning wood into a bowl.?? Woodturning?is a form of?woodworking custom millwork that is used to create wooden objects on a lathe. Woodturning differs from most other forms of woodworking in that the wood?is moving while a stationary tool is used to cut and shape it. Many intricate shapes and designs can be made by turning wood. Bowling originates from an ancient Egyptian game dating back to 5200 B.C. Now, more than 100 million people in over 90 different countries, enjoy this game born from customized millwork. Some lanes are now made of synthetic material, but many bowling alleys still use wooden lanes, which are in reality a form of custom millwork.

The instructor in this video takes a log as a specimen.? The bowl is supposed to be in the middle of the log as pointed out by the demonstrator.? The first thing that she tells is that to turn a log into a bowl, you must choose the centre of the half cut section of the tree.? That is to say, the bowl is cut radially not axially, because if you choose the axial section of the log or the pith, which would be the section, where the tree gets the nutrients.? And it will always crack.? Therefore, one way around this is to turn a side grain bowl via a millwork process.? This is a bowl where the grain runs perpendicular to the bed. Some other things that you can use the turn a bowl is a small branch in case you have a small lathe.? There are small lathes that have a capacity of 4,6 or 8inch swing.? Other sources of wood turning material can be commercially prepared blanks if you do not have access to wood from the logs and trees.? She shows some examples of commercially prepared wood blanks? in the video.? Some of the blanks are sealed with wax by the manufacturers to keep the moisture in until you are ready to turn it.? Therefore you should treat the wood that is covered in wax as in it green.

The log used in this video is of cherry wood.? Cherry is a hardwood with a closed and straight grain with a glowing reddish-brown color that darkens with age and exposure to sunlight. Cherry wood is favored by cabinet-makers because it resists warping, it?s strong, but light in weight, and is considered one of the most beautiful decorative woods.?Other important types of woods are Maple and pine that can be used in fine art of custom millwork.
