Winter is coming*. Many drivers with rear-wheel-drive cars add bags of sand to their trunk to provide extra weight to improve control in winter weather, but those bags can be too heavy to move individually by smaller people and they're a pain if you need to pour out a little sand for traction. Instead store sand or kitty litter in 2-liter soda bottles to make it easier to move and pour out when needed.
Environmental weblog Chasing Green also notes that bags of sand might also break or develop leaks if you've used the same bag for years of winter driving. Keep in mind that adding weight to trunk won't help your car if is front-wheel-drive or AWD, but for rear-wheel-drive vehicles adding weight increases traction in the drive wheels.
Even if you don't have a rear-wheel-drive vehicle it might be worth carrying one or two 2-liter bottles of sand or kitty litter so that if you get stuck you can pour out some of the sand or kitty litter in the path of your tires to gain extra traction to help free your car.
