Travel Postcard: 48 hours in Austin, Texas

AUSTIN |
Fri Sep 28, 2012 3:12pm EDT

AUSTIN (Reuters) ? In Austin, flip-flop-wearing University of Texas students mingle with coat-tie-and-boot-clad state lawmakers and technology workers in jeans.

The Lone Star State capital prides itself on its slacker vibe, but it?s also the place where a college student named Michael Dell once started a computer business and where Whole Foods Market started and has its headquarters.

This fall, Austin will attract Formula One fans from around the world, who will descend on the new Circuit of the Americas racetrack southeast of town for a November Grand Prix.

The city that calls itself the Live Music Capital of the World hosts blowouts like the Austin City Limits Music Festival and the South by Southwest music, film and interactive conferences.

But the ideal way to experience Austin, where the best weather is in the spring and fall, is just to hang out. Somewhere between the barbecue and the exhilaratingly chilly waters of Barton Springs, you?ll find bliss, even if you visit during a sizzling Texas summer.

FRIDAY

5 p.m. ? Check in to your hotel. You could stay in the heart of hip South Congress Avenue at the zen-like Hotel San Jose, or in East Austin at the Heywood Hotel, a modern boutique hotel. Downtown options include the W Hotel (a new bronze statue of Willie Nelson is just steps from the front door) or the historic Driskill Hotel, built in 1886.

Grab a drink at or near your hotel: sangria at San Jose?s poolside bar, or a cocktail at the W or Driskill bars. From the Heywood, grab a free loaner bike and ride to Hillside Farmacy, a recently restored 1950s pharmacy that offers afternoon tea and plates of cheese and marmalade.

7 p.m. ? Enjoy dinner at Contigo, a restaurant inspired by a South Texas ranch. Sit at an outdoor picnic table under strings of lights and munch on crispy fried green beans and house-made sausages while sipping a beer or El Pepino (tequila, cucumber, mint, lime).

9:30 p.m. ? Head to the bars in the Rainey Street area, starting with Clive, a remodeled house with a cozy wooden interior and white leather chairs.

SATURDAY

8:30 a.m. ? Take a walk, jog or ride a bike on the trail around Lady Bird Lake. Grab coffee and a pastry at either Jo?s location.

10 a.m. ? Texas appreciation tour! Check out the pink granite state capitol, which any Texan will inform you is taller than the U.S. Capitol. Then head over to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, where you can see the late Texas bluesman Stevie Ray Vaughan?s well-worn ?Number One? Stratocaster guitar at the Texas Music Roadtrip exhibition until October 14.

11:30 a.m. ? It?s time for a religious experience: Texas barbecue. Arrive early to the JMueller BBQ trailer on South First Street, before the meat sells out, and dig in to your peppery brisket at the picnic tables. If you don?t want barbecue, there?s another great option across the street: Elizabeth Street Caf?. At this Vietnamese-French spot, you can get a grilled octopus vermicelli bowl, macarons for dessert and, if you want to linger, a carafe of mandarin mimosa punch.

1:30 p.m. ? From the restaurant, walk over to South Congress Avenue, where you can browse shops selling vintage and new clothing, gifts and toys. Pick up some Texas footwear at Allens Boots, where the friendly salespeople will teach you what to look for in a boot.

3:30 p.m. ? Grab your bathing suit and head to Barton Springs Pool, a spring-fed oasis that many consider the soul of Austin.

7 p.m. ? After stopping by your hotel to clean up, head to Uchiko on North Lamar Boulevard, the ?Japanese farmhouse? and sushi restaurant where you will have already made reservations now that Top Chef: Texas winner Paul Qui has become a celebrity. You?ll drool over each artfully arranged plate of morsels like diver scallop with tomatillo, kalamata olives and black lime.

9:30 p.m. ? It?s time to learn why Austin calls itself the Live Music Capital of the World. Check the Austin Chronicle or austin360.com for listings. If you?re lucky, you can catch Kat Edmondson, Gary Clark Jr., Grupo Fantasma, Quiet Company or Carolyn Wonderland. But you can?t go wrong at The Continental Club, Antone?s, or, if it?s a nice night, Threadgill?s. If you want to hit the dance floor at a Texas honky tonk, put on your new boots and head to The Broken Spoke.

1 a.m. ? Hungry again? The waffles at 24 Diner are calling your name.

SUNDAY

10:30 a.m. ? Head out for Sunday brunch. The delicious and inexpensive Mexican breakfast at El Meson on South Lamar Boulevard ? with house-made salsas and tortillas ? may be Austin?s best-kept secret. Across the street is another tasty brunch option: Olivia, a light-filled restaurant where the chai French toast with peaches comes with mint grown in the on-site garden. If you aren?t in the mood for a sit-down meal, pick up the most Austin of morning meals ? breakfast tacos ? at the south location of Tacodeli.

Noon ? Head to the intersection of West Sixth Street and Lamar Boulevard, where you can peruse music from Texas and around the world at Waterloo Records, visit the beloved local bookstore, BookPeople, and ogle at the chocolate fountain and walk-in beer cooler at the flagship Whole Foods Market store below the company?s headquarters.

2 p.m. ? Beat the heat in an air-conditioned movie theater. The Alamo Drafthouse ? try the Ritz location downtown ? is an Austin favorite where you can order burgers and beer from your movie seat. And downtown?s Violet Crown is a sleek art house theater and bar that offers snacks like hummus with pita bread.

Prostate Cancer Post-Treatment Tips | BlackDoctor

A man in a blue shirt looking pensive

According to the CDC, African American men have the highest incidence of prostate cancer of any race in the U.S. and are more than two times more likely to die from the disease. In fact, prostate cancer is the fourth leading cause of death in African American men.

Unfortunately, this means that receiving a prostate cancer diagnosis is something many Black men will encounter in their lifetime. How a man responds to this news can be a matter of life and death.

Like what you?re reading? Then LIKE us on Facebook!

After you?re diagnosed with prostate cancer, it?s very important to make the necessary lifestyle changes that will improve the quality of your life.

According to Dr. Thomas Farrington, prostate cancer survivor and president and founder of the Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN), here are some of the top things a man with prostate cancer needs to stay healthy.

    1. Knowledge

?Knowledge is the best tool to help you survive,? Dr. Farrington says. ?Black men need to ask ?should I be treated or go into active surveillance?? ?What is my stage of cancer?? ?Surgery or radiation?? Men don?t understand that you must continue to be diligent in post-prostate cancer treatment.?

There are many resources available to learn about prostate cancer facts and treatments, such as PHEN and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.

Dr. Farrington also stressed an underlying reason for men to educate themselves about recommended lifestyle habits and possible treatments, in addition to maintaining a higher quality of post-cancer life ? prostate cancer recurrence.

?Just because you?ve received treatment doesn?t mean the cancer can?t come back, so men to know about available treatments, particularly new treatments that are on the horizon. An example of this is an exiting new treatment that addresses prostate cancer recurrences called Provenge, which uses the body?s own immune system to fight cancer. Many insurance companies cover this, and it?s important for men to be aware of this new option.?

    2. The Right Diet

It can be very difficult to adhere to a balanced cancer diet, particularly during treatment, while your body is working overtime to fight the cancer and repair healthy cells that may have been damaged as a side effect of treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. At the same time, many cancer treatments, such as radiation, can leave you weak and without an appetite ? this makes it both challenging, yet crucial, to get in those essential nutrients, vitamins, and minerals your body needs in order to fight and regain strength.

?You really do need to be concerned with your diet,? says Dr. Farrington. ?One key aspect of a prostate cancer diet is being lower in fat.?

Experts also recommend reducing animal fat in your diet. Studies show that excess fat, primarily red meat and high-fat dairy, stimulates prostate cancer growth. In addition, avoid trans fatty acids (found in margarines, fried and baked goods) and high-calcium diets, which are also both known to promote cancer growth.

Foods known to help aid in maintaining prostate health include:

Ghana Life Debt Relief ? hot news

The possibility that Greece may be forced to default on its international and commercial debts raises fears that the whole Euro zone may be thrown into turmoil with other countries such as Ireland and Portugal following. Yet countries in Africa have often defaulted on their loans with little media comment. The British government, as well as others, has several times written off debts owed by Ghana and other sub-Saharan countries. African banking seems to offer decided advantages in this respect with loans to businesses often quietly written off when debtors run into financial difficulties and default on repayments. The easiest and most obvious way to help a poor person is to give him or her some money. Gifts don?t need to be repaid, and if the donor does not expect repayment no problems ensue. Problems arise only when the donor?s loan is the recipient?s gratefully accepted gift. Europeans living and working in Ghana soon learn that there is no such thing as a personal loan. Old hands advise new arrivals to lend only what they can afford to lose. This system operates harmoniously amongst individuals but it is the cause of misunderstanding when extended to small and medium enterprise (SME) development.Overseas development agencies mount projects to support new and existing SMEs that almost invariably include provision for making small loans. The intention is usually to recycle available funds by recovering repayments and making new loans to a new generation of enterprises. This seldom happens. The small business proprietors regard the business loans as they would personal loans and don?t really expect to repay them. After all, the money is often used to pay hospital or school fees, and these investments don?t earn a profit. The result is usually the early winding up of the scheme with outstanding debts written off. Most development agencies active in Africa soon became aware of this problem and almost always combined credit finance with accounting training. One main aim was to encourage SME owners to separate their company accounts from their personal/household accounts. This was much easier said than done, especially when the business owner was the head of a large extended family whose many members could descend upon him with substantial demands at any time. For the head of a clan or a village chief the task verged on the impossible. Yet some such community leaders have built up substantial businesses that have traded for many years. This has only been possible because periodically their debts have been written off.To provide finance to larger businesses, international donors have often made grants to local banks to operate a special credit scheme. When a new scheme is announced, local entrepreneurs hasten to register their claims and the funds are soon fully committed. Repayments will usually be made as long as the foreign agency shows interest, but after that the inward flow of funds shrinks to a trickle. After a decent interval the scheme is wound up and outstanding debts are written off. When asked why they do not pay back loans entrepreneurs usually say that they object to repaying at interest rates above thirty percent the large part of the loan collected by the bank manager. Bankers in Africa are as adept as their counterparts in Europe and America in awarding themselves large bonuses to be repaid from other people?s future earnings. Some defaulting debtors are pursued by banks and a few cases reach the courts. Some companies are forced into liquidation. But for every debtor who comes to grief there are many who are left untouched. They are free to borrow again because they know that their bank managers would be as reluctant as themselves to have the circumstances of their loans exposed. The Greek government must be hoping that such feelings might result in some of its debts being written off.

Sony Xperia tipo and tipo dual reach the US in unlocked form, give Americans a taste of dual SIMs

    Sony Xperia tipo hands-on

Few of us who live outside of Asia or Eastern Europe know the potential convenience of a dual SIM phone. Own one and you can globetrot, or else keep separate home and work lines without the bulk of an extra device in the pocket. Sony is gambling that enough Americans have that multi-line desire by selling the Xperia tipo dual and its regular, single-SIM counterpart in the US as unlocked GSM models. Neither of the Android 4.0 phones is what we'd call a powerhouse with the same 3.5-inch screen, 3.2-megapixel camera and 800MHz Snapdragon inside, but both can latch on to HSPA 3G on AT&T, refarmed T-Mobile coverage and 2100MHz carriers abroad, even if the single-SIM tipo curiously has 900MHz 3G support that the tipo dual lacks. It's undoubtedly price that Sony is counting on more than anything: at respective contract-free prices of $180 and $190 for the tipo and tipo dual, the pair of Xperias may be sold most often as travel-only phones for the jet set.

Netanyahu warns it's 'very late' to stop a nuclear Iran

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Thursday that Iran will have enough enriched uranium to make a nuclear bomb by next summer and urged the world to draw a clear "red line" to stop it in its tracks.

Saying it was getting "late, very late" to stop Iran, Netanyahu flashed a diagram showing the progress Iran has made toward creating a bomb. He said Iran had already completed the first stage of uranium enrichment, and then he drew his own red line on the diagram to highlight the point of no return ? the completion of the second stage and 90 percent enrichment.

"Iran is 70 percent of the way there and ... well into the second stage. By next summer, at current enrichment rates, they will have finished the medium enrichment and move on to the final stage," Netanyahu said. "From there it is only a few more weeks before they have enriched enough for a bomb."

Netanyahu has repeatedly argued that time is running out to stop the Islamic Republic from becoming a nuclear power and the threat of force must be seriously considered.

"I believe that faced with a clear red line, Iran will back down ? and it will give more time for sanctions and diplomacy," the Israeli prime minister said. "Red lines don't lead to war, red lines prevent war ... nothing could imperil the world more than a nuclear-armed Iran."

Netanyahu's speech marks perhaps his final plea before Israel takes matters into its own hands. Israeli leaders have issued a series of warnings in recent weeks suggesting that if Iran's uranium enrichment program continues it may soon stage a unilateral military strike, flouting even American wishes.

The Obama administration has urgently sought to hold off Israeli military action, which would likely result in the U.S. being pulled into a conflict and cause region-wide mayhem on the eve of American elections.

Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be an existential threat, citing Iranian denials of the Holocaust, its calls for Israel's destruction, its development of missiles capable of striking the Jewish state and its support for hostile Arab militant groups.

"Given this record of Iranian aggression without nuclear weapons, just imagine Iranian aggression with nuclear weapons," Netanyahu said.

Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes but Israel, the U.S. and other Western allies reject the claim. Four rounds of U.N. sanctions have already been placed on Iran.

A U.N. report last month only reinforced Israeli fears, finding that Iran has moved more of its uranium enrichment activities into fortified bunkers deep underground where there are impervious to air attack. Enrichment is a key activity in building a bomb, though it has other uses as well, such as producing medical isotopes.

While Israel is convinced that Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapon, American officials believe Iran has not yet made a final decision to take the plunge, even as it develops much of the infrastructure needed to do so.

Obama has repeatedly said he will not allow Iran to gain nuclear weapons and has said the U.S. would be prepared to use force as a last resort.Israel's timeline for military action is shorter than that of the United States, which has far more powerful bunker-busting bombs at its disposal, and there is great suspicion in Israel over whether in the moment of truth Obama will follow through on his pledge.

Speaking shortly before Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accused Israel of ethnic cleansing for building settlements in east Jerusalem.

"It is a campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian people via the demolition of their homes," Abbas said in his speech to the U.N. General Assembly.

Netanyahu rebuked Abbas in his own address, saying: "We won't solve our conflict with libelous speeches at the U.N."

Israel conquered the eastern part of Jerusalem from Jordan during the 1967 Mideast War. It later annexed it but the move has not been internationally recognized. The Palestinians want east Jerusalem to the capital of their future state in the West Bank.

Abbas also said he has opened talks on a new bid for international recognition at the U.N., but didn't specify exactly when he will ask the General Assembly to vote.

"Intensive consultations with the various regional organizations and the state members" were underway, he said.

The Palestinians will apply to the General Assembly for nonmember state status.

That stands in sharp contrast to last year, when they asked the Security Council to admit them as a full member state, but the bid failed.

Abbas insisted that the new quest for recognition was "not seeking to delegitimize Israel, but rather establish a state that should be established: Palestine."

Palestinian officials said their bid is likely to be submitted on Nov. 29.

Facebook Begins Eliminating Fake Likes, Page Fan Counts Drop

Facebook has begun eliminating fake Likes on brand Pages, after pledging to ramp up security in August.

[More from Mashable: Facebook Groups Adds Dropbox Integration]

On Wednesday, the social network started weeding out bogus Likes caused by compromised accounts, deceived users, malware or purchased bulk Likes, it confirmed to TechCrunch.

Less than 1% of Likes on a page would be removed, "providing they and their affiliates have been abiding by our terms," Facebook said in a blog post.

[More from Mashable: Facebook Shares Drop Below $20 for First Time in 2 Weeks]

The percentage is consistent with data provided by PageData, an independent Facebook Page tracking service.

Among Pages with the most total Likes, Texas HoldEm Poker saw a loss of more than 96,000 Likes in the past day, according to the service. That clocks in around 0.15% of its 65.3 million total Likes.

Other top offenders included singers Rihanna who lost 28,000 Likes, Shakira who shed 26,000 and Lady Gaga who dropped 34,000.

Zynga's Farmville game was another big loser with 45,000 Likes gone.

Facebook previously said it had "dedicated protections" against threats that result in fake Likes, but emphasized that these improved systems to safeguard the network's integrity "have been specially configured to identify and take action against suspicious Likes."

"Users will continue to connect to the Pages and Profiles they authentically want to subscribe to, and Pages will have a more accurate measurement of fan count and demographics," Facebook wrote in its August post. "This improvement will allow Pages to produce ever more relevant and interesting content, and brands will see an increase in true engagement around their content."

Facebook did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Do you subscribe to any Pages on the fake Likes offenders' list? Tell us in the comments below.

Obama blocks Chinese wind farm over national security

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday blocked a privately owned Chinese company from building wind turbines close to a Navy military site in Oregon due to national security concerns.

Ralls Corp, which had been installing wind turbine generators made in China by Sany Group, will now be forced shelve its plans and divest its interest in the four wind farm projects it acquired earlier this year.

"There is credible evidence that leads me to believe" that Ralls Corp and Sany Group "might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States," Obama said in the order issued by the White House.

The projects were all within or in the vicinity of restricted air space at a naval weapons systems training facility in Oregon, the administration said.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) had ordered Ralls to stop all construction and operations at its four wind farm projects while the government completed its investigation and provided its recommendation to Obama.

Although CFIUS reviews dozens of foreign investment deals for potential national security concerns, the president is rarely called upon to issue a formal order as companies usually abandon their deals or divest assets when the panel takes issue with their transaction.

The last time a president formally blocked a deal on national security grounds was in 1990 when then President George H.W. Bush stopped a Chinese aero-technology company from acquiring a U.S. manufacturing firm.

Obama's decision comes as two other Chinese companies are vying for CFIUS approval and the president campaigns for a second term. Obama's trade and economic policies have come under fire from his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, who has accused him of being soft on China.

The Treasury Department said Obama's decision was not a precedent for other investments from China or any other country.

Feel Like You Got A New Home With Home Improvement | Home ...

The best way to add value, comfort and a little style to your home is to carry out some home improvements. There are many things to consider when making the choice to alter your home. The following article should help you out with all your home improvement needs.

You do not have to have a mansion to have a chandelier. Even some very fancy and very attractive chandeliers can be purchased for well under $500, and they can add over a thousand dollars worth of value to the home. Of course, in the meantime, the chandelier is going to provide some beautiful lighting and it will create a brilliant ambiance for the home.

Make sure you turn the power off in the area you?re in and before you start work on anything hooked up to your electric supply. Not taking this important step can cause you to be electrocuted or even die.

You may be eager to demolish things that you intend to rebuild, but doing so incorrectly could have serious consequences. Always double check structures behind walls and cabinets before ripping them down. If any electrical configurations are involved, repairs may be costly.

If you can afford it, real wood floors are a better choice than laminate. Laminate looks almost like real wood and is easy to care for, but it cannot be refinished. Years from now, whoever owns the house will need a brand new floor.

Make fixing a leaky faucet a priority. Little leaks become big leaks fast, and every drip costs you money and wastes water. Also, that dripping can damage counters, cabinets, or even stain your tub or sink. Repairing or replacing a faucet can be a cheap and easy project. When water damages other fixtures, the cost of fixing the problem will be high.

When it comes to home improvement projects, having fun is essential. Even though you should use care when doing a project, it?s important to enjoy it as well. If you don?t, you?ll probably make mistakes. If this describes you, think about hiring a professional.

Worn flooring should be refurbished or replaced. Some flooring options can be more costly, but the long term investment is well worth it. Replacing old carpet or out-dated linoleum can be all you need to create a new room feel. If you use hardwood or tile, you can add long-lasting value as well.

Does your flooring look dingy or worn? You can always put stick-on laminate on top of your old floors. Although some people might think this is cheap flooring, it can actually be very nice to look at. Additionally, this flooring is easy enough to lay down so that most people can do it on their own.

Think of how to properly dispose of any debris. Unless you have found a way to manage it ahead of time, debris resulting from home improvement projects can quickly interfere with your project. Lease a dumpster or find someone that has a large truck to help you clear the debris out so you can continue.

Buy windows that are double-glazed. They are costlier, but they lower energy bills and reduce noise significantly. When you are renovating your home, switch to these in order to save money and time. They will help keep a comfortable temperature in the home as well as a nice quiet atmosphere to live in.

Look to your kitchen when you want to get an idea of where to begin home improvements and updates. Use a solution of 2-to-one TSP and water to get rid on grease stains on the walls. You can get off any dirt or grease. Re-paint in beige colors; you are going to be surprised at how different the room looks when you are finished.

Before you sign any home improvement contract, make sure you take the time to read the contract. It may seem daunting, but you?ll need to make sure that everything within the paperwork is something you approve of. If you sign without realizing what the contract contains, you can lose a lot of time and money. Always get everything in writing. Never take the contractor?s word without the paperwork to back it up.

When considering home improvements, you should understand how long different types of materials, repairs and upgrades last. A new chimney, for example, can last up to a 100 years. By contrast, that fancy wooden deck will probably start to deteriorate after only 15 years. Vinyl floors will last twenty or more years but oak lasts around a 100. Consider all of these things as you plan a renovation, to determine if the money and energy you put out is worthwhile.

When you?re doing major home improvement work on your roof, choosing a reliable contractor is extremely important. Before agreeing to anything, it?s best to do a little research to find a good roofing company. You can check the BBB or do an online search for reviews from previous customers.

When considering any home improvement project, it is important to evaluate whether you can do it yourself, whether you can afford the costs, and whether the results you will achieve are worth it. It?s important for you to remember that your home is an asset to you in every sense of the word. It?s beauty and comfort as well as being monetary value for you. Take your time and make great improvements

Suspicions ignored as bosses let chemist work on

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick speaks with reporters in Cambridge, Mass., Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012. Patrick says he expects criminal charges will be brought in an investigation of misconduct by a state lab chemist who admitted faking drug sample results, forging signatures and skipping proper procedures. BOSTON (AP) ? Chemist Annie Dookhan was "Superwoman," a colleague at a Massachusetts state crime lab used to joke. She seemed unstoppable in her quest to please prosecutors, police and her bosses, testing two to three times more drug samples than anyone else, working through lunch and not bothering to put in for overtime.

"The kind of person, if you owned your own business, you would want to hire her," a supervisor would later tell police.

At least as far back as four years ago, some colleagues and higher-ups had their suspicions about the way she seemed to plow through so many cases so fast. One supervisor complained he never actually saw her in front of a microscope. But her superiors let her work on.

Now, the startling explanation has come spilling out: Dookhan told investigators she faked test results on drug samples and cut other corners.

The scandal has created a legal morass of monumental proportions, with tens of thousands of drug cases in Massachusetts thrown into jeopardy.

Dookhan, 34, is still under investigation by the state attorney general and has not been charged, and investigators have offered no motive for the fakery. She has not responded to repeated requests for comment.

    The fallout could be huge.

Gov. Deval Patrick ordered a shutdown last month of the Boston lab, and the scandal has led to a firing and two resignations, including that of the state public health commissioner, whose department oversaw the William A. Hinton State Laboratory Institute before it was transferred to the Massachusetts State Police over the summer.

A war room of sorts is being assembled to pick through Dookhan's cases and determine which ones have been compromised.

Law enforcement officials say Dookhan tested more than 60,000 drug samples involving 34,000 defendants in her nine years at the lab. More than a dozen defendants are already back on the streets as authorities try to determine whether Dookhan's actions tainted the evidence in their cases, and more could be sprung. Authorities say more than 1,100 inmates are doing time based at least in part on Dookhan's work.

"It's incalculable the damage she's done ... not to say all the time, money and energy it's going to take the commonwealth," said defense attorney Bernie Grossberg, who has already had one client get out of prison and is being inundated with calls from others.

It remains to be seen if any lab supervisors face criminal consequences.

The governor said Thursday it was troubling that Dookhan and her supervisors "did not seem to understand the gravity" of her actions.

"I fully expect, and indeed I will say I hope that there are charges, and I think that all of those who are accountable for the impact on individual cases need to be held accountable," Patrick said.

The governor has not said how much money he expects the state will have to spend dealing with the crisis, but on Thursday his budget chief, Jay Gonzalez, wrote to district attorneys, court administrators and other state officials asking for an initial estimate of the costs expected as a result of the lab breach.

The letter also seeks a description of the "scope, nature and timing" of the anticipated work.

Dookhan's alleged confession and the missed warning signs were detailed in state police reports obtained this week by The Associated Press.

As early as 2008, a supervisor noticed Dookhan's testing numbers were high. He spoke to her superior, but nothing happened. In 2009, the supervisor took his concerns to another superior, saying he never saw Dookhan in front of a microscope.

In 2010, a supervisor did an audit of Dookhan's paperwork but didn't retest any of her samples. The audit found nothing wrong. The same year, a fellow chemist found seven instances where Dookhan incorrectly identified a drug sample as a certain narcotic when it was something else. He told himself it was an honest mistake.

In one incident detailed by state police, a lab employee witnessed Dookhan weighing drug samples without doing a balance check on her scale.

Dookhan was handling a staggering number of samples. An average chemist could test 50 to 150 samples a month, but Dookhan was doing more than 500, according to monthly reports, a lab employee told police later.

At one point in 2011, a top official even gave Dookhan a special project to try to slow her down.

Other lab employees worried about their own jobs and their prospects for promotion because their productivity wasn't as high as Dookhan's.

She was eventually suspended from lab duties after getting caught forging a colleague's initials on paperwork in mid-2011. Dookhan resigned last March as the Public Health Department investigated.

Over the summer, police interviewed Dookhan at her home, and she admitted faking test results for two to three years, forging signatures and skipping proper procedures, according to the reports.

Dookhan said she cheated by "dry labbing," or identifying a drug sample as a narcotic by looking at it instead of testing it. She said she routinely tested only five out of every 25 samples, and deliberately turned a negative sample into a positive for narcotics a few times.

At least one defense attorney has also accused her of overstating the weight of some of the seized drugs to expose defendants to heavier penalties.

Dookhan told police she just wanted to the get the work done and never meant to hurt anybody.

"I screwed up big-time," she was quoted as saying. "I messed up bad, it's my fault. I don't want the lab to get in trouble."

(AP) ? A passenger ferry collided with a ship believed to be carrying liquefied natural gas and sank west of Indonesia's main island early Wednesday morning, killing at least eight people, officials said.

More than 210 passengers and crew were rescued, said Heru Purwanto, an official at Bakauheni port on southern Sumatra island. More than 80 survivors have been hospitalized, including at least one who was in critical condition.

The search for survivors continued, though it was unclear how many might still be in the water.

There was no immediate word on the cause of the collision, or whether the South African-flagged vessel carrying the liquefied natural gas was damaged. An expert team has been deployed to check for gas leaks in the carrier, but there have so far been no reports.

The collision occurred about 4 miles (6 kilometers) from Bakaheuni port in Lampung province, said Bambang Ervan, a Transportation Ministry spokesman.

Ten nearby merchant ships quickly responded to the captain's distress signal, sailing in from the busy Sunda Straits to help rescue passengers and crew. Just 20 minutes after the distress signal was given, the ferry sank.

"The ferry went down so fast after the collision," Purwanto said.

Purwanto said eight bodies have been pulled from the waters, including that of a 10-year-old girl. They are believed to have drowned because they could not swim and jumped into the sea without life jackets, he said.

He said the official manifest showed the ferry was carrying 213 passengers and crew, as well as 78 vehicles. It has a capacity for 300 passengers and 70 vehicles.

Manifests, however, are often unreliable in Indonesia because tickets are sold onboard to passengers who are never registered.

Two helicopters and two warships were joined by a naval dive squad and several other search and rescue vessels in the search for survivors, said Gagah Prakoso, a spokesman for the National Search and Rescue Agency.

The Bahuga Jaya ferry links Java and southern Sumatra. It went down about 40 minutes into the 90-minute journey, after departing from Java's Merak port.

Ferries are a major source of transportation in Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation, with more than 17,000 islands and a population of 240 million. Sea accidents are common due to overcrowding and poor safety standards.

Oscar Winner Hilary Swank Lists Her Multimillion-Dollar Baby ...

Wednesday, September 26, 2012, by Rob Bear

Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank has reportedly split with her boyfriend of five years, Hollywood agent John Campisi, and apparently their break up has brought about the sale of their shared Pacific Palisades home, which Swank bought in March 2007 for $5.8M. The 6,700-square-foot, six-bedroom, 6.5-bath Mediterranean mansion is a far cry from the car Swank and her mother lived in when they first moved to Hollywood. Originally built in 1928, the house was substantially modified and renovated by L.A.-area starchitect Marc Appleton, with interiors by NYC-based designer Mark Zeff. (UPDATE: Or was it Peter Dunham?) Listed for $9.495M, the mansion features a 17-seat home theater and a wine/cigar room, with peeks at the Pacific. Art enthusiasts may also be interested to know that this house also lies just downhill from the artists retreat at Villa Aurora, where writers Thomas Mann and Bertolt Brecht and filmmaker Fritz Lang met after escaping Nazi persecution during World War II.

    Today we will highlight

Within the pages of this contemporary crafts publication, readers have the opportunity to meet inspiring people, both hobbyists to celebrity designers; learn crafting techniques and receive an abundance of unique project tutorials in a variety of crafting genres, including sewing, paper crafts, fibers, mixed media, repurposing ideas, entertaining and more; discover new must-have products and resources; and above all, ignite the creative passion within themselves! We all wish we had the ability to beautify our lives with creative touches; Stitch Craft Create inspires the creative process and promotes living a handmade life by teaching readers how to seek, find and express creativity.

We had a chance to sit down with Shannon Miller, editor for Stitch Craft Create. ?

Sew Beautiful: ?Where did your love of crafting come from and have you crafted all of your life?

Shannon Miller: ?I have been a crafter for as long as I can remember. Growing up, my parents were always incredibly encouraging of creative play, and there was never a shortage of art supplies, crayons or glue at our house. My fondest childhood memories are of "making things" to play with or give to others. Just the other day, my sister and I were digging through our old dollhouse furniture, and there was a scrappy decoupaged box I clearly remember making, along with wonky furniture I'd crafted from floral foam and fabric scraps (not my finest work, but wonderful memories!)?As I grew up, crafting and creativity remained a central part of my identity. My parents gave me my first sewing machine when I went off to college, and today most of what I make is still for our home or family. I strongly considered attending a graduate school for art therapy because of my deeply-held belief that creating things with your own two hands is one of the finest forms of stress relief; and my husband knows that one of the best things he can offer me when I'm feeling anxious is a couple of hours alone in my craft room!

SB:?What is the most rewarding part of your job as the editor of Stitch Craft Create magazine?

SM: Knowing that the product we create is how people choose spend their extra cash and leisure time is an intrinsic reward like no other. Craft time is my happy place, and being part of a company that helps foster the creative spirit and enjoyment of others is so endlessly fun for me. You know that feeling when you meet a new person and discover that you're both "into crafts," causing you to squeal with excitement at your newfound shared interest? That's how I feel every day, and I feel like our readers are my best friends for that very reason!

SB:?What is the hardest part or most challenging part of your job?

SM: Trying (and failing) to make everybody happy all the time can be very intimidating, and it makes me very sad any time I find out that someone is disappointed, no matter what the reason. And of course, the deadlines are relentless! But all we can do is our best, and keep trying to make that best even better. I'm blessed to work with a team that is so very passionate about what we do.?Creating each issue of SCC has been a real learning process, and we're so excited about what's to come in the future.

SB:?Since you work with a multicraft publication, can you tell us which medium is your favorite?

SM: Oh my, I love it ALL! How can I choose just one? Personally, I'm a hand embroidery junkie. I also love quilting, although I always tend to bite off more than I can chew when it comes to quilts, so small sewing projects are often my craft of choice. I love sewing for my children and for our house, and I'm getting into clothing as well. I also have a soft spot for any project that crosses mediums, like stitching on paper, or ribbons and buttons on a scrapbook page, and any kind of repurposing/upcycling projects. Events and entertaining are another place I tend to dump lots of ideas; I love getting to make everything coordinate (I get a little obsessive!) Although, the parties I help decorate or host tend to always be a last-minute production, so they're always more incredible in my head than in real life. ;)

SB:?Since you just had a baby recently and are now the mother of two very little ones, does your job and home responsibilities allow for any personal craft time? How do you get your "craft fix?"

SM: Two babies under 18 months old has certainly put a cramp in my "free time," but things are settling down now that the newborn is not so new. I can usually grab a few minutes to myself on the weekends or after bedtime. I've gotten into scrapbooking this year, because I love that I can buy and play with all the scrumptious products and tidbits to my heart's desire, yet whip out a complete page in one sitting if I want. It's great stress relief; I like that it allows me to embrace that Instagram-esque concept of capturing a moment and savoring a memory of even small things. And of course, I'm incredibly lucky to work in and around crafts at work, so that certainly helps fill the creative gap when I don't have time for myself at home.

Thank you to Shannon for taking time from her very busy days to allow us to get to know her a little better; the brains behind the creativity!

Most Over-rated Aspect in MLM? Leadership | Mark Januszewski

Most Over-rated Aspect in MLM? Leadership

I CAN HEAR THE SCREAMING NOW

The self help gurus and MLM leaders aren?t going to like it but the truth is the truth.

Leadership, as currently touted in MLM, is not only dramatically over-rated??it?s harmful.

Imagine a new person just signed up with you and they plug into all these rousing leadership speeches.

    It creates fear.

    Why?

80% or more is linked to nonsense that does not apply to networking and the other 20% is linked to the leaders? volume, pin level and years in the business.

And Sally, your new sign up, is overwhelmed.

But what will they follow if they don?t follow the BIG HITTER?

    Simple

    ?

All you have to do is lead them to the next step both effectively and efficiently.

HOW TO DOUBLE AN MLM PAY CHECK

There?s an old saying in MLM?..as soon as we reclaim our common sense, our paycheck doubles.

I?m not sure it?s true?.my experience is that it more than doubles.

What behavior does Sally, your new rep, need to engage in with you to build her confidence?

It?s a multiple choice?..easy one for you and a great reminder for me.

    1. Learn John Maxwell?s Leadership Principles?
    2. Listen to the top earners who?ve been doing this for 10 or 20 years and love talking about themselves and leadership?
    3. Learn everything about the plan, product and company like ?leaders? do?
    4. Talk to people and earn some money?

If we are going to make some money, we need to talk to people.?? That?s a common sense and it?s pay raise. BOOM!

All you have to do is make calls with them, teach them the network marketing skills that get a ?yes???and repeat until they master it.

    Very simple 3-step tip here??and it?s huge?.

Influence is everything. Focus on behaviors, not results.

STEP 1 ? find out what Sally desires and help her engage in the 1 behavior that will create checks.?? The problem with the blow-hearts talking about leadership is that they always talk about results.? This is a massive mistake.? And I can prove it, [previous post].

Sally is looking to you??not the plan, product, company or leaders [wink-wink] she hears on conference calls [for goodness sake, limit her to a max of 1 month that you choose.....not her] ?.she?s looking to you.?? She won?t tell you but bank it as a truth that will make you wealthy.? So lead?..by teaching here the skills hands on.??? The cool thing??? It?s the only leading you ever have to do.?? Lead by example, demonstrating the only income producing, goal advancing behavior in the MLM biz.

And when she does, if you?ll focus on her desires and link them to the behavior she must engage in to obtain her objective, you?ll become a top 5% producer in MLM.

Sally is now ?influenced? by you and ready to make calls with you.

STEP 2 ? be prepared.? Getting a ?yes? 80+% of the time is a skill.?? Everybody knows we simply cannot teach what we do not know.? You?ve got to learn and demonstrate the skills.

STEP 3 ? repeat.? Go through the same process with Sally?s new people and Sally listening.? Soon you become a group of people helping people learn the skills hands on.? And?.new people joining will, as I said in the video, ?copy? the behavior of the group to gain acceptance.? This is a pretty simple skill that insures duplication.

Big Money? Work 3-Deep, hands on.

Without question, by focusing on Sally?s desire and linking that to behaviors, not results, will gain influence?..all you have to do is execute.

Did your upteam make calls with you?

    Teach you the skills?

    Work with your personals?

    And their personals?

?..would it have made a difference?

    No matter.

What matters is that you do it because it?s you that is going to be the difference, in the end?.in Sally?s success.

Want more common sense?..and a pay raise??? Grab these video skills, scheduled for the 11th of October a day early.
