SEOUL, South Korea ? Officials say a South Korean cargo ship has sunk after being rocked by an explosion off the country's west coast, leaving three people dead and eight others missing.
Coast guard officer Ko Jae-young says 11 South Korean and five Myanmar crewmen were aboard the 419-ton ship when the explosion occurred for an unknown reason Sunday.
Ko says five people were rescued and searchers are trying to locate those missing.
He says the ship usually carried chemicals but was empty when it sank.
The incident occurred relatively far from the tense sea border with North Korea and the coast guard doesn't suspect the North was involved.
North Korea is accused of torpedoing a South Korean warship in 2010, killing 46 sailors. The North has denied involvement.
