Timothy John Shanahan | Seattle Funerals ... - Seattle Funeral Home

Timothy John Shanahan was born on June 2, 1940 in South Nassau Community Hospital, Oceanside, Long Island, NY and was baptized at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Rockville Center, Long Island, NY.

He attended Terrell Avenue Elementary School in Oceanside and graduated from Hempstead High School, Hempstead, Long Island, NY in June 1958. On July 21, 1958, he enlisted in the United States Navy and completed boot camp at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois. He also completed the Naval Meteorology Program and in 1958 was stationed briefly in Texas where he met the Shanahan family that had moved from NY to Texas in the 1940?s. He was then assigned to the aircraft carrier Lake Champlain and was honorably discharged on July 20, 1962. During his service in the United States Navy, Tim received the ?Good Conduct Award.?

He worked at IBM in New York City, but resigned in the late 1960?s to set out driving across Canada to Alaska. He settled in Vancouver for a short time and then in 1970 moved on to Carnation, Washington, where he worked as a baker. He once said that he had visited 47 states.

During his childhood in NY, he met his Father?s sisters, brothers and their children. This helped him to eventually prepare the Shanahan Family Tree. The Family history and stories told by his Mom, Grandmother and Grandfather, allowed him to also construct his Maternal Family Trees.

In the late 1970?s, his Uncle Ray moved to Carnation with his wife Lu Ming and their two daughters, Lu Ming (Mamie) and Marion. Lu Ming (Mamie) gave birth to a daughter, Bethany, and sons, Robert and Dustin. Marion gave birth to a daughter, Ashlee, and son. Christopher. All remained in the State of Washington or Oregon. They were Tim?s beloved Family.

Tim loved Lu Ming and Marion, the two daughters, who were his cousins, and tried to make their lives better. Each of their children, Bethany, Ashlee, Robert, Dustin, and Christopher and the grandchildren were exceptional in his eyes. Tim also became very fond of Priscilla and her daughter, Gracie. Priscilla, his cousin living in Hawaii, came to Washington to meet him. He proudly included all of them in his Family Trees.

Tim?s closest kin, his sister and brother, called each other regularly over the past few years to keep up on each other?s lives and to also discuss and gather information on their Ancestry.

Disney California Adventure - Entertainment Capital of Anaheim?

Quick?can you name any 10 shows or groups currently performing at Disney California Adventure?

No? That's OK. until two weeks ago, I probably couldn't have either?and I'm the one who writes about the park every week. But the day after Cars Land and Buena Vista Street opened, my husband and I returned to DCA to spend some time outside the Radiator Springs city limits, and I was happily surprised by just how entertaining the refurbished Disney California Adventure is.

Over the course of the morning, we enjoyed the musicians at the Paradise Gardens Bandstand, watched Goofy conducting the "Instant Concert...Just Add Water" in Paradise Bay, and clapped along with the Trash Can Trio.

On Buena Vista Street, we saw Five and Dime entertaining a crowd outside the Carthay Circle Theatre, then caught a performance of the Red Car News Boys before heading to lunch.

In the afternoon, we checked out Dancin' with Disney, passed the Disneyland Resort All-American College Band in Hollywood Land, spent a moment chatting with one of the Citizens of Buena Vista Street, saw Pluto posing for photos outside Elias and Co. Department Store, and caught the end of Minnie's Fly Girls in Condor Flats.

As we left DCA for the day, I turned to my husband and asked, "When did this become the entertainment park?"

While Disneyland's signature performing groups?Billy Hill and the Hillbillies and the Dapper Dans?are probably the first things you think of when someone mentions Disney entertainment, Disney California Adventure actually has more live entertainment options this summer. Here are my favorites among the many new additions to the schedule.

Red Car News Boys

I always walk away from a performance by the Red Car News Boys humming one of the show's songs. It's hard not to be charmed by this engaging troupe of news boys (and one news girl), who roll up in a shiny new Red Car Trolley singing, "California, Here We Come!" Arriving in front of the Carthay Circle Theatre, they proceed to sing out the day's headlines in an effort to attract buyers for their papers.

Each headline is accompanied by a different song: "Take Me Out to the Ball game" for news about Babe Ruth; "Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie" for a story about Charles Lindbergh; "We're in the Money" for a financial headline. These songs provide every performer an opportunity to spend a moment as the lead. The performers also showcase their physical talents while they sing, such as dancing the Charleston or executing cartwheels.

Mickey's just arrived in town, and the news boys want to see if he really has what it takes to become "the next big thing." This is a Mickey we rarely see?shy, bashful, somewhat uncertain. Encouraged by the news boys, Mickey joins the song?and of course, you know he nailed it.

The show ends with the Newsies anthem "Seize the Day," and includes a novel encounter with one of the Citizens of Buena Vista Street. Molly the Messenger arrives with a telegram for Mickey Mouse, with news of a big audition. I love the way the show's creators pulled Molly?a character you see riding around Buena Vista Street throughout the day?into the show for a cameo. It gives the show a sense of place and immediacy, and it's really a lot of fun.

While some (including this writer) feel that the thumping bass beat behind some of the arrangements is a bit too modern for 1920s Los Angeles, the era re-created on Buena Vista Street, the show has an endearing quality that makes me enjoy the performance, and willing to overlook an anachronistic musical choice or two. With concealed speakers built right in, the Red Car Trolley makes a great backdrop and rolling stage, though I've noticed that the acoustics seem optimized for the crowd gathered around the performance space; from elsewhere on Buena Vista Street, the vocalists do not seem to blend or harmonize quite as well. That means you should try to grab a front-row seat if you want to catch the Red Car News Boys in any of their six daily performances on Buena Vista Street.

Five and Dime

Buena Vista Street also hosts Five and Dime, a jazz group that performs eight times per day outside the Carthay Circle Theatre. The story here is that the five musicians came from Chicago, following Route 66 to pursue their dreams in Hollywood. Along the way they, found singer Dime, "and it all made cents" (pun intended).

This show includes another Citizens of Buena Vista Street cameo?Goofy, drawn by the music, joins Dime in the opening number, dancing to "Ain't We Got Fun." As the song ends and Goofy saunters off, the band introduces themselves.

Five and Dime features opportunities for audience participation, starting when Dime plucks an unsuspecting male from the audience and serenades him a la Betty Boop. A musician brings a female audience member on stage for a concert for one, and the resulting mash up of "I Wanna Be Loved By You" and "Oh, You Beautiful Doll" is surprisingly entertaining.

Kids get their chance to join the show as the band tells a tale of "courage, triumph, and pigs!" Dime leads the young volunteers in singing and dancing along to "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf,"

Though Five and Dime usually draws a smaller crowd than the Red Car News Boys (and unfortunately, some of the audience leaves when Goofy does), this is a performance that will appeal to a different segment of DCA visitors, and in some ways seems better themed to Buena Vista Street. It doesn't hurt that the singer is extremely talented and a joy to watch. If you need some change, catch Five and Dime eight times a day outside the Carthay Circle Theatre.

Instant Concert... Just Add Water

What was the size of a football field and completely wasted during daylight hours? The answer used to be the World of Color show platform, but the new Instant Concert... Just Add Water puts the nighttime spectacular's infrastructure to use for a charming, albeit too brief, daytime show along Paradise Bay.

Six times a day, a tuxedo-clad Goofy attempts to conduct the fountains in a concert, with predictable results. The show is just five minutes long and easy to miss if you don't make a point of seeing it, but is definitely worth seeking out.

Dancin' with Disney

The hidden gem of the new DCA entertainment line-up is Dancin' with Disney. Tucked away in stage 17 in a corner of Hollywood Land, with just a few signs to lure passersby, this is perhaps the best new offering for younger visitors, or older Disney fans who just want the opportunity to hang out with some rarely seen Disney characters.

The former "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" sound stage has been converted into a cavernous dance hall, with a colorful stage and live DJ at the far wall. The confetti-speckled carpeted dance floor is ringed by plastic furniture where weary parents can rest while their kids blow off some energy. It's not much to look at, and if you walk in between sets you might be tempted to walk right back out?but wait around and enjoy the air conditioning?the party is about to begin.

An informal dance party gives guests the ability to dance with lesser seen Disney characters. Video by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

Every 30 minutes, an alternating group of Disney characters arrives and takes to the dance floor. One is a Villains-centric grouping that may include Jafar, Queen of Hearts, Big Bad Wolf, Captain Hook, Mr. Smee, Prince John, and the Sheriff of Nottingham. The second is an all-female assortment, where you might find Lilo, Marie, Clara Cluck, Clarbelle Cow, Clarice, Daisy, Drizella, and Anastasia.

The characters dance with the audience for about 15 minutes, while the DJ and a cast of character handlers and dance hosts lead the children in activities focused on each character. During the Villains set, kids might be encouraged to form giant crocodile jaws with their arms and "chase" Captain Hook around the dance floor to the tune of Elton John's "Crocodile Rock," or form a conga line with the Queen of Hearts. Air jets send a flurry of confetti leaves across the dance floor, as kids huff and puff with the Big Bad Wolf to Ke$ha's "Blow."

Marie from The Aristocats shows off her moves at the Dancin' with Disney venue. Photo by Adrienne Vincent-Phoenix.

The female characters are introduced with "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," and each take a turn in the spotlight. Everyone polkas along with Clara Cluck for "The Chicken Dance," and little boys run for cover when Drizella and Anastasia kick up their heels to Beyonce's "Single Ladies."

Cast members are careful to let parents know that this is not an autograph session, so leave the pens and books behind and just come dance with the characters. Dancin' with Disney is held daily from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. inside Stage 17 in Hollywood Land. The dance party is currently scheduled only through the summer.

These are just four of the newest entertainment options at Disney California Adventure, with nearly a dozen more offered throughout the park. If DCA has never been on your entertainment radar, now's the time to come be pleasantly surprised.

Methods for nutrition monitoring in cancer patients: a cognitive perspective

In the present medical context, the evaluation and the monitoring of factors other than mere physical symptoms are an urgent demand.
In particular, the issue of quality of life (QoL) has become a relevant target in the treatment of cancer. However, the approach towards these aspects is not well standardized and the actual applications in a concrete setting are fragmented, left to personal or local initiative. If this is true for QoL in general, it is particularly relevant in the specific field of nutrition. Indeed, though the growing awareness of a correlation between chronic diseases and dietary habits has led to an increased interest in nutrition, both before and after cancer, very little is still known about the methods that measure this important variable of the QoL. Indeed, good nutrition may have a relevant impact on QoL, positively affecting both the physical and psychological well-being. Targeting this issue implies using proper instruments to both monitor and educate the patients. Hence, we argue that it is vital for oncologists to be able to individuate the best tool available in a specified context, so as to achieve an important goal with little effort, also adopting standardized strategies proved to be efficacious. In this framework, we briefly reviewed the tools more frequently reported in the scientific literature. We suggest that through a cognitive approach, it is possible to achieve important clinical targets, initially by understanding the patients? needs, values, and psychosocial factors involved in nutritional behaviour and food-related decisions, in order to develop a personalized approach. Hence, this is the only way to support concrete actions for promoting healthier diets, thus preventing recurrences, monitoring chronic conditions, and supporting a good QoL.

Syrian rebels: 170 regime tanks mass near major city

EDITOR'S NOTE: Image supplied by the opposition Shaam News Network.

Bodies of people allegedly killed by government forces in Douma, Syria, on Thursday.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

ANTAKYA, Turkey - Syrian helicopter gunships reportedly?bombarded a strategic town in northern Syria overnight and tanks moved close to the commercial hub and its largest city Aleppo, rebel fighters said on Friday.?

Meanwhile, anti-regime groups reported what one called a "hideous massacre" in Douma, outside of Damascus, and distributed a video and photograph purportedly showing the aftermath of a killing that left more than 50 dead, including women and children. ?Journalists do not operate freely in Syria so there was no way of confirming the report.?

A senior rebel officer said around 170 Syrian tanks had assembled at an infantry school near the village of Musalmieh northeast of the city of Aleppo, just 19 miles from the Turkish border but were keeping?well clear of new Turkish air?defenses?installed to curb Syrian action near its frontiers.

"They're either preparing to move to the border to counter the Turkish deployment or attack the rebellious (Syrian) towns and villages in and around the border zone north of Aleppo," General Mustafa al-Sheikh, head of the Higher Military Council, a grouping of senior officers who defected from Assad's forces,?told Reuters by telephone from the border.?

Turkey sends military convoys toward Syrian border

Omar Abdallah, an activist in Idlib coordinating with the Free Syrian Army said: "After taking hits in rural Aleppo and Idlib, the army is re-grouping ... There is speculation that these forces intend to ring Aleppo starting July 1."?

Turkish commanders inspected the missile batteries deployed on the border region on Thursday following Syria's shooting down of a Turkish warplane a week ago, which has sharply raised tensions between the two nations.?

Massacre?
Meantime, Syrians in the besieged city of Douma wrapped mangled and bloodied corpses in white burial shrouds early on Friday, according to video posted online.

Contains graphic images: Link to YouTube video, unverified by msnbc.com

"A massacre has been committed in the city of Douma, killing more than 50 in this bloody day, where Assad mafias and death squads launch aggressive attacks, bombardment of the city, and executions," U.S.-based anti-Assad Syrian Expatriates said a statement.?

A bomb targeting Syria's highest court has exploded in Damascus. NBC's Bill Neely reports.

Douma is predominantly Sunni community that has become as a focus of resistance to the Assad government.

The group gave details for the killings of 10 members of the same family, including four chidren, their mothers and grandmother. ?More than 200 were wounded, the group said.?

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 190 people, including 125 civilians, were killed on Thursday throughout the country.

The United States, Britain and France have said that Assad is responsible for the violence, which the United Nations estimates has killed at least 10,000 people, and is no longer fit to govern. Russia and China, however, reject what they describe as Western calls for "regime change."?

A strong explosion rocked the Syrian capital near a busy market and the Palace of Justice. Msnbc.com's Richard Lui reports.

Turkish deployments?
The Turkish deployments, a graphic warning to President Bashar al-Assad, coincide with rising violence across Syria and increasingly urgent international efforts to forge a peace deal as the nation slips into full-blown war.?

As the Turkish-Syrian dimension ratcheted up further pressure, peace envoy Kofi Annan said on Friday he was "optimistic" that crisis talks in Geneva on Saturday would produce an acceptable outcome, which has so far proved elusive.?

Turkey to help 'liberate the Syrians from dictatorship'

Regional analysts said that while neither Turkey nor its NATO allies appeared to have any appetite to enforce a formal no-fly zone over Syrian territory, Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan had made it clear Assad would be risking what he called the 'wrath' of Turkey if its aircraft strayed close to its borders.?

Recently, there were clashes close to the border between Syrian forces and rebels. Last weekend, Damascus said "terrorists" infiltrating from Turkey were killed and there have been reports of Syrian forces shooting into camps for refugees in Turkey.?

Turkey, sheltering some 34,000 Syrian refugees and providing bases for the rebel Free Syria Army (FSA), is in the forefront of the efforts to bring down Assad.?

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told his newly appointed cabinet that a real "state of war" exists in the country and directed them to direct all its efforts toward vanquishing the uprising against him. ITV's Bill Neely reports.

Syrian tanks mass?
Rebel sources in Turkey's Hatay region said Assad's helicopters attacked Saraqeb, a strategic town deep in Idlib province, but kept away from the area directly along the Turkish border in the rural regions of Idlib and Aleppo provinces.?

Neither Turkey, which fears a local clash escalating into a regional sectarian conflagration, nor Syria, has any interest in a confrontation on their shared border.?

Ankara, which has the second biggest army in NATO, called an emergency NATO meeting after its warplane was shot down.?

Turkey has in the past talked about creating a humanitarian corridor on Syrian territory if refugee flows became dangerously unmanageable or the scale of killing in Syria became intolerable. But it had always said this would require international endorsement.?

"NATO just doesn't look like it's in the mood," David Hartwell, Middle East analyst, IHS Jane's, said. "What you might get is the Turks forcing a de facto no-fly zone."?

Erdogan announced earlier this week that he had issued new rules of engagement to his border troops and said any Syrian military elements approaching Turkish borders and deemed a threat would be treated as a target. But he failed, perhaps deliberately, to specify how close Syrian forces could come to the border before becoming vulnerable.?

"The Syrians might accept a very narrow zone along the border. Syria will remain very reluctant to get involved in any conflict with Turkey. They would be up against a very serious military foe," Malcolm Chalmers, research director at Britain's Royal United Services Institute, said.?

The world has been accused by Syrian opposition activists of inertia over the bloodshed. Diplomacy has failed to produce agreement between Western powers, backing the opposition, and Russia, which has used its U.N. veto to block Western and Sunni Arab moves to drive Assad from power.?

Reuters and msnbc.com's F. Brinley Bruton contributed to this report.

One Day At A Time: Why I do what I do...

I am constantly being questioned about "Why I Do What I Do". Well, I'm going to take a moment to try to answer some of the questions I hear often....

1. What made you want to be a foster parent?
A child that I knew and loved had been placed in foster care. It not only devastated her but it devastated us. We loved her and we knew that foster care was what was best for her considering the circumstances, but it was hard. We thought, what if we could take her and her be our foster child. Well, that set the ball rolling. After much prayer, 7 months of preperation, we brought our daughter Samantha home. She was 15 years old. She remained in our home and aged out of the system. Although?we didn't adopt her,?she is still our daughter.

2.After Samantha, what made you keep fostering?
Well, after the work & time it took to become a foster parent we figured why not help more kids. After all we knew the need for foster parents was VERY high.

3.Does it hurt to let them go?
Most of the time it does. Sometimes it hurts really really bad. But, not always. When you work closely with the birth families (like we ALWAYS do), the kids & their birth families become part of your life & family (In most cases). Now sometimes you can't work with a family nomatter how hard you try because they are so angry & bitter, but most of the ones we've dealt with have been thankful and appreciative to have us in their lives. We can still see most of our past fosters anytime we want.

4.Does it drive you crazy having people in your house all the time?
Having the kids-no. I love having kids in my home. I can't imagine my life when we have no kids in our nest. A far as all the other people in & out to see our fosters-yes. It drives me nuts. We have case workers, CASA, GALs, and therapist in and out of our home ALL THE TIME. Sometimes several times a week. This has been the hardest for me. I've always been a rather private person. I'm not one that likes company all the time, but I've had to give that up. Our home & lives are an open book to the Dapartment of Family & Children's services. Sometimes it feels like they own us and in a way they do.

5. How does your?family feel about you fostering?
Well, it's mixed. Some like it and some don't but all respect our decision. My birth kids for the most part are fine with it.?They?like the?younger?kids and do best with them, not so much the older kids, that is why we are only taking little ones at this time. As far as my family. I don't think my parents really like it, but they have accepted it. My?Mom-in-law thinks it is wonderful and encourages us and lets us know?she is?praying for us constantly. I appreciate that. My father-in-law is happy if we are. Extended family, well as far as I know they all are fine with it.

6 How many fosters have you had?
26 plus a few extras. 26 foster kids have lived here, but several more?have come?through just for the day or night.

7.Do you adopt / want to adopt?any foster kids?
We didn't sign up to adopt, but we've never said we wouldn't. It is case by case. Actually, we have almost adopted 2 different times (Bailey & Z), but both were failed adoptions. Our 4 year old foster is eligible for adoption now,?but we are not planning to adopt him. He is being matched with a waiting family. As I said, it is a case by case thing. We may never adopt, but one day if a child comes into our lives?that just "fits" perfectly then we might.

8. How long?do you plan to?foster?
?I don't know. I can't answer that. As long as I feel it's God's will. My hubby said atleast 10 more years, but I'm not sure about that. I'm just taking it year by year.

9. How many kids can you have in your home?
Well, the rule is 6 kids max under the age of 16 can live in a foster home. But, you have to also have space for that many. Up to three kids of the same sex can share a bedroom. So that also determines how many kids a foster family can have. We are approved for 5 foster kids at this time, because?our birth child?Jacob is still home and?under age 16. However, we've never had 5 foster kids at one time. The most we've had is three.

10. Have you ever had to have a kid removed from your home?
No. I have come close a few times.??I try to be selective of the kids I take in. I get calls almost every day with kids needing placement but I say "not at this time" way more than I say?"I can take them". I have to be very selective when taking kids, because many kids in foster care come with extra baggage(fear, anger, violence,?etc)?that I know may put my family or home at risk. My heart wants to say "yes" to every kid because every kid needs a home, but I know that is impossible. I have to put my family & our safety first.

11. Is it hard dealing with birth parents?
Sometimes. I try to build a good relationship with every family. It's much easier when you have a good relationship because you have to deal with the family all the time. But, when it is a bitter one, it is very hard. I've only had one family that I absolutely could not work with. I refused to carry the baby to any visits. I refused to speak with the mom or the grandmother. I hated when the baby had to go for visits because the family was so hostile. When that baby left, my heart broke. I worried so much about what would happen to him, because of the situation. I disagreed with?the judge?when she sent him home.?I just knew it wasn't good. I was right. That child came right back into care and matter of fact he is still in care.

12. Is it hard dealing with case workers?
Not really. Their constant visits drive me nuts sometimes, but I actually love?the case workers that I have right now?and my CASAs. I've had a few over the 7 years that I wasn't so crazy about, but once we weeded out the not so good ones, it's been much better. It's not my place to do the case workers job, so I don't do well with case workers who don't do what they are suppose to do.? I also don't do well with new case workers who try to tell me how to do things when I've been doing this for 7 years.

13. What is the best part of fostering?
Being able to make a difference in the world and lives of others. I truly believe God created every single person with something in mind for them to do. I truly believe that this is Brent's & my calling in life. I also believe by serving others that I'm serving God. I think if every person would find their calling that this world would be a better place and every person would be happy because their life would be as God planned it to be. However, to many people?live their lives for themselves or their own family and miss out on the extra?blessings that God had planned for them. I love the feeling I get from knowing that?my life has meaning?and that I'm needed. It gives me a high knowing that my life is not just being wasted but being used?to better the lives of?others. Fostering has changed my life and made me a better person.

14. What is the worse part of fostering?
Letting go is hard. Having to say goodbye to the child that you have grown to love as your own is very hard. It feels almost like a death in your family. It hurts.?Each child fills a spot and then they leave?and it feels empty for days & sometimes months after.?But the hardest of all, is giving back a kid to a parent that you feel is not yet ready or able to be a parent to that child. This has happened only 3 times of out 26 cases, but those three times have nearly pushed me to my limit. All kids need to go home if possible but sometimes we send them home knowing that they will come right back into care. It's frustrating. Our system is messed up.

Well, that's all for now. If you have a question, just ask.

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart;and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him,and he will direct thy paths. ~Proverbs 3:5-6

(AP) ? Marathon swimmer Penny Palfrey powered through the Straits of Florida on Friday as she attempted a record 103-mile (166-kilometer) unassisted swim from Cuba to Florida that tests the limits of human endurance and the will of the high seas.

Slathered with sunblock and lubricant to prevent chafing, the British-born Australian bade farewell to onlookers, dove headfirst into the calm, bathwater-warm seas off Havana and began stroking slowly northward with a kayaker as escort.

"There's a lot of work that's gone into this over the past year," Palfrey said, thanking her husband, her team and Cuban officials who helped facilitate the trip. "It's all coming together, and so exciting to finally get to this point where we can get started."

A member of Palfrey's crew was tweeting to fans, while a webpage updated her location every 10 minutes or so based on data from a GPS device worn by the swimmer. The site showed her making steady northward progress through the Straits of Florida, where the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean meet.

"Swimming strong. Great conditions. Some jellies, but not bad," read one tweet.

As she hit 10 hours in the water Palfrey had traveled about 18 miles from Cuba, said Andrea Woodburn, who was managing Palfrey's Twitter and Facebook accounts. Woodburn said the evening forecast called for thunderstorms and some gusty winds, but otherwise Palfry's weather expert reported the "situation is about as good as it gets in the Straits."

Palfrey will have to fight through physical and mental fatigue while fending off dehydration, hypothermia and dangerous marine life. She estimates that it will take 40 to 50 hours to make the crossing, and the currents will determine where in Florida she comes onshore.

If Palfrey succeeds, she'll go in the record books as the first woman to swim the Straits without the aid of a shark cage. Instead she's relying on equipment that surrounds her with an electrical field to deter the predators.

Australian Susie Maroney made the crossing in 1997 at age 22, but with a shark cage. American Diana Nyad made two unsuccessful cageless attempts last year on either side of her 62nd birthday, but had to call them off due to a debilitating asthma attack and painful Portuguese man o' war stings. She plans to try again this summer.

Palfrey, a 49-year-old mother and grandmother, is more than a decade younger than Nyad.

She was wearing a regular sporting swimsuit instead of a wetsuit, and planned to put on a porous, non-buoyant Lycra bodysuit that provides cover down to the wrists and ankles whenever jellyfish may be a threat.

That's particularly the case at night, according to her support team of more than a dozen navigators, handlers and medical personnel who were escorting her on the 44-foot (13-meter) catamaran Sealuver.

Palfrey is no stranger to jellyfish stings, which forced her to abort two past swims in Hawaii.

A 20-year veteran of distance swimming, her personal best came last year when she completed 67 miles (108 kilometers) between Little Cayman and Grand Cayman islands.

At a news conference Thursday, Palfrey said she swam competitively in her youth but only discovered ultra-long-distance swimming later in life.

"I spent my teenage years swimming and studying, and then I've spent a lot of time raising my family and supporting my husband's business," she said. "And now I feel that it's my window in life to do something that I love to do. I don't believe that I can do it much later in life so this is my opportunity now. "

Friday morning she was upbeat and focused on the task at hand as she prepared to set off from the Hemingway Marina in western Havana.

Asked about the first thing she planned to do on arrival in Florida, she laughed and said, "get out of the water."

"Beautiful sea, beautiful sunrise. It's a lovely morning in Cuba," Palfrey said. "Thanks. I'm gonna get started."

How to Handle an Imbalance of Power in Your Relationship ? In Our ...

by: Clarisse Thorn

Note: This post was originally featured on Role/Reboot and was republished with permission. You can find the original here.

Have you ever been involved with someone you were totally into, who seemed much less interested than you did? Or have you ever been with someone who was way more into you than you were into them? These situations happen to almost everyone eventually, and as a culture, we?ve devised a few ways to discuss them. For example, we have lingo like ?friend zone? to indicate a person who?s pining after a friend. What?s hard is finding good advice on how to deal with those relationships?from either position.

Values like ?equality? and ?egalitarianism? are deeply embedded in U.S. culture. This, among other factors, makes it difficult to talk about power differentials in relationships. A lot of the time, the instinct seems to be to ignore a given power differential, because it?s uncomfortable to think about it. And I guess that for some couples, that works. At least, it works inasmuch as they can make the relationship function without talking about it?sometimes only barely, but it functions. In my experience, though, it?s best to have some mutual awareness and communication of what?s going on within a power differential, because in that case, it?s easier to be gentle and responsible with our partners.

Lots of relationship formations are relevant to a discussion about power differentials: S&M play is the most obvious example, but there are also examples like cross-generational relationships, relationships where one partner has way more money than the other, etc. The important questions become: How does the partner in the more powerful position avoid abusing the other partner? How often is power a one-way street, anyway? Again, since S&M plays with power so blatantly, these questions are most often out in the open with S&Mers. For example, S&Mers are fond of saying that ?the submissive has all the real power,? what with safewords and all. But if a rich older man falls for and marries a beautiful but poor young woman, then is it always obvious that he has far more power? Does she, sometimes, merely wield a different kind of power?

Outsiders are often quick to condemn such relationships. But these arrangements have always struck me as incredibly contextual; they?re dependent on how much genuine respect the partners have for each other, and the depth of their communication?as with any relationship.

I see ?mixed-investment? relationships, where one partner is way more into the other, as part of this tapestry. For one thing, there?s the one-way street question: Does the person who?s less invested always have more power? Sometimes, the partner who?s less invested will spend so much time feeling anxious about hurting the other partner that they strongly limit their own actions.

In all relationships containing a strong power differential, there?s a question of when (if ever) the ?powerful? partner has a responsibility to end things with the ?less powerful? partner. In the case of mixed-investment relationships, I think there often comes a point where the more ?powerful? partner can too easily abuse the other partner?s affections, and thus has a responsibility to end it. Detecting that point can be difficult, though.

Often, this is complicated by the fact that a more-invested partner can tell that the other partner is less invested?and will become anxious about ?scaring them off.? Being in love with someone means wanting to spend time with them, and wanting to spare them pain. Say I?m totally in love with some guy who is Not That Into Me. If it?s obvious to me that showing a guy how much I like him could make him feel uncomfortable and cause him to limit his time with me, then my natural instinct will be to hide my investment.

It?s easy to say that I ?should? be open about my feelings with him?but most of us have faced this choice before, and know how hard it is.

Another complication is that sometimes, the relationship mismatch will change or flip over time. I chased my first boyfriend for years before he committed to me, but a few years after that, I was the one who dumped him and he was the one who was devastated.

I?ve known people who felt that every time a relationship is uneven, it?s the more invested partner?s responsibility to end it. But again, if we place these relationships within a wider context, it becomes clear that they?re just another kind of relationship with a power differential. Like the others, it?s a question of communication and respect. If both partners respect and value each other, then a mixed-investment relationship doesn?t have to be a problem. The problems come in when partners aren?t transparent about their expectations, and don?t stay aware of what they need.

So perhaps the best advice to give people in a mixed-investment relationship would be thoughts like:

  • Know what you want, and what you are willing to give.
  • If you want the relationship to develop further, and your partner makes it clear that it won?t, then perhaps it?s time to evaluate walking away.
  • If you don?t want the relationship to develop further, and your partner does, then making that clear is very important.
  • Relationships like these can often feel like a ?waste of time? to the more-invested partner. Are they? It?s a question each person should ask themselves.
  • Relationships like these can also be stressful on the less-invested partner. Are you worrying a lot about whether your partner?s feelings are too strong? That?s another question people can ask themselves.

More thoughts are always welcome. How would you advise a person in a mixed-investment relationship?

Apple Senior VP of Hardware Engineering Bob Mansfield to retire, be replaced by Dan Riccio

Apple Senior VP of Hardware Engineering Bob Mansfield to retire, be replaced by Dan RiccioApple has announced that its Senior VP of Hardware Engineering, Bob Mansfield, will retire and over the course of the next few months transfer his role to Dan Riccio. Mansfield is credited with leading the Mac engineering team since 2005 and took on a more visible role as an exec during the reshuffling in 2008. He's also mentioned as leading iPhone and iPod engineering since 2010 (when he took over the role from Mark Papermaster in a move curiously timed around those antenna troubles) and the iPad since it began. He'd been with Apple since 1999 when it acquired his previous employer, Raycer Graphics, and most recently popped up on our radar earlier this year while integrating another acquisition, flash memory maker Anobit. If you'd like to get familiar with his replacement, Dan Riccio is currently vice president of iPad hardware engineering. Check the press release after the break for a few more details on both individuals, there's no word on Mansfield's post-retirement plans.

(AP) ? Grinning and waving, 14 women who survived the horrors of World War II paraded Thursday in an unusual pageant, vying for the honor of being crowned Israel's first "Miss Holocaust Survivor."

Billed by organizers as a celebration of life, the event also stirred controversy. In a country where millions have been touched by the Holocaust, many argued that judging aging women who had suffered so much on physical appearance was inappropriate, and even offensive.

"It sounds totally macabre to me," said Colette Avital, chairwoman of Israel's leading Holocaust survivors' umbrella group. "I am in favor of enriching lives, but a one-time pageant masquerading (survivors) with beautiful clothes is not what is going to make their lives more meaningful."

Pageant organizer Shimon Sabag rejected the criticism, saying the winners were chosen based on their personal stories of survival and rebuilding their lives after the war, and physical beauty was only a tiny part of the competition.

"They feel good together. They are having a good time and laughing in the rehearsals," said Sabag, director of Yad Ezer L'Haver, or Helping Hand, which assists needy Holocaust survivors and organized the pageant.

"The fact that so many wanted to participate proves that it's a good idea."

Nearly 300 women from across Israel registered for the competition and contestants were whittled down to the 14 finalists who appeared Thursday.

The contest, part of Helping Hand's annual "cultural" night, included a lavish dinner and music at a Haifa reception hall. Some 600 people attended, including two Cabinet ministers, Moshe Kahlon and Yossi Peled, himself a Holocaust survivor.

The women, ranging in age from 74 to 97, clearly enjoyed themselves. Wearing black dresses, earrings and necklaces, and sporting blue-and-white numbered sashes, they grinned and waved as they were introduced to the adoring audience. Music played as the contestants walked along a red carpet, introduced themselves and described their memories of World War II.

"I have the privilege to show the world that Hitler wanted to exterminate us and we are alive. We are also enjoying life. Thank God it's that way," said Esther Libber, a 74-year-old runner-up who fled her home in Poland as a child, hid in a forest and was rescued by a Polish woman. She said she lost her entire immediate family.

A four-judge panel consisting of three former beauty queens and a geriatric psychiatrist who specializes in treating Holocaust survivors chose the winner. Hava Hershkovitz, a soon-to-be 79-year-old, was banished from her home in Romania in 1941 and sent to a detention camp in the Soviet Union for three years. Today, she lives in an assisted living home run by Helping Hand.

"This place is full of survivors. It puts us at the center of attention so people will care. It's not easy at this age to be in a beauty contest, but we're all doing it to show that we're still here," the silver-haired Hershkovitz said.

Wearing a glittering tiara, she was joined by her granddaughter, Keren Hazan. "I'm very proud of her because she's the most beautiful woman in the room tonight," Hazan said.

In addition to the contestants' accounts of surviving Nazi ghettos and concentration camps, their later contributions to their communities were also considered, Sabag said. Physical appearance was maybe "10 percent" of the criteria, he said, though a cosmetics company was recruited to help the women dress up for the occasion.

"We always tell them to dress well and look good. To think positive and to take care of themselves," Sabag said. "Always look at life with a smile and continue to live."

The thought that physical appearance could even remotely be a factor rubbed some the wrong way. Avital, of the Holocaust survivors' umbrella group, criticized the cosmetics company, saying it was using Holocaust survivors in a cheap marketing stunt to promote their products.

"Why use a beauty contest to show that these people survived and that they're brave?" wondered Lili Haber, a daughter of Holocaust survivors who heads an Israeli organization that assists survivors from Poland. "I think it's awful. I think it's something a decent person shouldn't even think about."

The Holocaust, in which Nazi Germany oversaw the systematic slaughter of 6 million European Jews, plays a unique role in Israeli society. The country gained independence in the wake of the Holocaust, serving as a refuge for hundreds of thousands of people who survived the genocide.

Nearly 200,000 aging survivors live in Israel today, and the country's annual Holocaust Day is one of the most solemn occasions on the calendar. Restaurants and cinemas close, and the country comes to a standstill as sirens wail for two minutes. Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, frequently make references to the Holocaust when discussing the threat they believe a nuclear-armed Iran would pose to the Jewish state.

Thursday's contest was among the many unconventional beauty pageants that have sprouted up over the years. The war-torn countries of Angola and Cambodia have held "Miss Landmine" contests for survivors of land mine explosions, Star Trek fans enjoy the "Miss Klingon Empire" contest in Atlanta, and plus-sized women in Thailand compete for the honor of "Miss Jumbo Queen." There are also a senior citizens' pageants in the U.S.

Gal Mor, editor of the popular Israeli blog "Holes in the Net," said Thursday's pageant was well-intentioned but misguided.

"Why should a decayed, competitive institution that emphasizes women's appearance be used as inspiration, instead of allowing them to tell their story without gimmicks?" he wrote. "This is one step short of 'Survivor-Holocaust' or 'Big Brother Auschwitz.' It leaves a bad taste. Holocaust survivors should be above all this."

Not Just Another Pasta Dish ? pantryobsession

Pasta with Anchovy Sauce

Don?t even think of the horrible hairy nondescript things they put on pizza (that my cat won?t even touch). Anchovies are wonderful and full of amazing flavour when melted into a great sauce and used in pasta.

My daughter who swears she would rather die than eat anchovies, went back for seconds and then took the left overs to school the next day for lunch.

This is a Nigella Lawson recipe but I used different pasta only because I used what I had in the pantry. It is important to use a thicker pasta so the ?sauce? coats everything. This is not really a sauce but a coating that is just amazing. I also topped this with Tallegio Cheese only because I had some and just love it but the recipe doesn?t call for it.

Ingredients

  • 2 large onions
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 5 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar
  • 12 anchovy fillets or 1 x 60g can (total weight) in olive oil
  • 15g butter
  • Tiniest pinch ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 125ml full-fat milk
  • 500g packet bigoli, bucatini, perciatelli or linguine or other long, robust pasta
  • 1 big bunch flat-leaf parsley, chopped

Method

  1. Finely chop the onions and garlic. To be honest, I?d do this in the processor every time. It?s not just that it?s easier, but that it makes the onion meld into the sauce so well later.
  2. Heat the oil in a heavy-based pan and cook the very finely chopped onion and garlic over a low heat until you have a soft, golden mush ? about 10 minutes. Add the brown sugar (though white is fine too), stir it in and let the onion mixture cook for another minute or so.
  3. Remove the anchovies from the tin, and chop them very finely. ?Add them to the onion mush, stirring until they begin to ?melt?, then stir in the butter and the pinch of ground cloves, followed by a tablespoonful of water and when all is combined, gradually stir in the milk. When this has come together as a puree, take the pan off the heat.
  4. Meanwhile, cook the pasta in abundant salted water according to the packet instructions, removing a ladleful of cooking liquid just before you drain it.
  5. Tip the drained pasta into the anchovy and onion sauce and add the reserved cooking water to help lubricate the pasta. You may not need all of the water, so pour in gradually. Add some oil from the anchovy tin if you need it too. And, of course, if the pan isn?t big enough to take all the pasta, just put it back into the pan it was cooked in and pour the sauce over the top.
  6. Sprinkle over most of the parsley, just roughly chopped, thoroughly turning the pasta in the pan to coat each strand in the anchovy sauce. Remove to a warm bowl, sprinkle over the remaining parsley and take to the table.
