Will ?Beyond Petroleum? oil giant BP pick the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest today in Baku, Azerbaijan? If so, I wouldn?t be surprised.

When I was arrested by the military police of during my investigation of BP for Channel 4?s Dispatches in 2010, one of the cops who surrounded our crew in the desert told us, with great pride:

?BP drives this country.?

Indeed it does.

In 1992, the newly independent former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan elected a kindly Muslim Professor, Abulfaz Elchibey, as President.

But the voters had made an error: Elchibey refused to give BP an exclusive contract to drill the nation?s massive Caspian Sea fields as the company wished. In 1993, with the assistance and, reportedly, guns provided by MI6, Elchibey was overthrown by the nation?s former Soviet KGB boss, Heydar Aliyev.

Within three months, Aliyev handed BP a sweetheart deal, called ?The Contract of the Century?, to take Azerbaijan?s Caspian oil.

The way to the no-bid deal for BP was ?greased?, to use the term applied by former BP operative Leslie Abrahams, with several million dollars in illicit payments and weekends with lap dancers in London for Azeri officials. I asked Abrahams, who was ordered by BP to provide military intelligence to MI6, whether he understood that he was paying ?bribes on behalf of BP and the British government? ? he replied, ?absolutely, yes?.

When asked, BP would not directly deny paying bribes.

The company told us, tantalisingly, that:

?While there were some facts in [Abrahams] account that were accurate, we do not recognise most of it and regarded it as fantasy.?

(Here is Abrahams in the BP office with his Kalashnikov).

Since BP has taken control of Azerbaijan?s oil, the nation has become fabulously wealthy ? at least for those close to the Aliyev family and BP.

And they eat well. The daughters of the new President, Ilham Aliyev (son of Heydar), picked up the tab for dinner in London for a half dozen of their friends. It came to ?300,000 (excluding tip and VAT).

According to Robert Ebel, the CIA?s former oil intelligence chief, the whereabouts of $140 million in BP and other oil industry payments are ?totally unknown?.

This week, Eurovision Song Contest viewers will be treated to the images of the ancient city of Baku where the Silk Road streets are filled with Maseratis and Bentleys. The Bentley dealership, and much of the capital, is owned by Azerbaijan?s First Lady, Mehriban Aliyeva, the ?Sexiest Muslim Woman in the World?.

That?s official, the vote was taken by Esquire Magazine. (She?s actually the twelfth ?Sexiest Woman in the World?, but the other eleven, infidels all, can be ignored here.) (Photo here with husband Ilham).

I?m not saying she doesn?t deserve the title: her fashion model face has been created at great expense by ?so much plastic surgery?, according to the US State Department Manning/WikiLeaks cables, that Lady Mehriban ?appears unable to show a full range of facial expression.?

But when I left the Old City and its Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana stores and headed off to Sangachal, the town where BP?s terminal operates, I found a nation heading full speed into the 14th century?

Baku, once the world?s leading manufacturer of oil drilling equipment, is now one of the world?s leading centers of oil-toxin cancers. Walking along the main street of Sangachal, the aptly nicknamed, ?Terminal Town?, was like doing the rounds in a cancer ward.

The local shoemaker, Elmar Mamonov ? who hasn?t sold a shoe in two years ? told me:

?This one?s daughter has breast cancer; there, Rasul had a brain tumor. Cancers we had never seen. His funeral was last week.?

Azlan, afraid to give his last name, paid to have a cancerous lung cut out, because employer BP wouldn?t pay. He says the oil company fired him after he could not keep up with his work.

And there was Shala Tageva, a schoolteacher, who has ovarian cancer. She needs treatment soon, but how to pay for it, Mamonov can?t imagine. Shala is Mamonov?s wife.

Suddenly, Mamonov stopped himself.

?If I am arrested, you will help me, yes??

Sorry, sir, not in the Islamic Republic of BP.

Oil, their main industry, has seen employment drop about 90 per cent according to journalist Khadija Ismayilova. Her father, the former oil production minister, was fired by Aliyev when the minister suggested bribery was behind the destruction of the industry, bribes which allegedly allowed BP to avoid ?local content? laws that would have saved those jobs.

Throughout the nation, we heard the same refrain: nostalgia for the old days of freedom and prosperity under Soviet rule; under BP rule, the people?s health, income and freedoms have decayed rapidly, as pollution has turned their Caspian fisheries into a dead, chemical toilet.

But Azeris are well entertained. The massive expenditure for the Eurovision Song Contest follows the government?s spending of $1 million for an Elton John concert during a depression.

Today, only one in seven dollars of GDP is paid in salaries (versus four of five dollars in the US and UK). Where have the billions gone? No one dare look for it, nor the source of the First Lady?s wealth. The last journalist who asked about the funds, Elmar Huseynov, was gunned down in his home. A journalist who questioned what happened to Huseynov was jailed. No third journalist is investigating what happened to the first two.

Azerbaijan is, nominally, a democracy. Indeed, the First Lady won a convincing election to Parliament (as did every other candidate supporting her husband?s regime ? there was not a single member of the opposition elected). But it doesn?t, in the end, matter who is voted in, as long as ?BP drives?.

Within hours of our arrest, my crew and I were released by the Deputy Chief of the Security Ministry: Imprisoning a Channel 4 reporter would have been an embarrassment for BP. But our witnesses to BP?s horrific drilling practices didn?t do so well. One made it out of the country, but others disappeared.

When you watch the Euro-warblers compete this Saturday, just remember that in Azerbaijan, the winners are already chosen: BP and the family of the Sexiest Muslim Woman in the World. And that?s not a pretty sight.

Israel might be a mecca of start-ups but it is also very well known for its military technology. Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), known worldwide for their commercial aerospace technology has given a demo of butterfly-shaped drone that will not even let the enemies know what they are dealing with. The drone, which is more of the size of a moth is expected to play a strategic role in determining where the enemy is hiding. Weighing at a mere 20 grams, the four-winged butterfly can flap its wings up to 14 times per second. Surprisingly, what amounts to 15 grams of its weight is a?camera?and a memory card. Sycamore not ready to pull trigger on Talbots deal

NEW YORK (AP) ? The women's clothier Talbots Inc. said Friday that a deadline expired without a deal in its exclusive talks about being acquired by a private equity firm and that it will actively pursue other options.

Its shares plunged by more than a third in morning trading.

The retailer said that Sycamore Partners told the Massachusetts-based company that "it is not prepared to execute a transaction at this time." Sycamore had previously indicated it would pay $3.05 per share for Talbots. The end of the talks sent Talbots' stock down $1.05, or 41 percent, to close at $1.51 Friday.

The two companies had been in exclusive talks on a potential $211 million buyout, with Talbots extending the discussions a second time earlier this week. The latest deadline was Thursday.

Sycamore offered to buy Talbots for $3.05 per share earlier this month. That's up from its prior offer of $3 per share for the Hingham, Mass. company, which it made in December.

Talbots said it is still open to pursuing a deal with Sycamore at the $3.05 per share purchase price. But it added that since its exclusive talks with Sycamore have ended, Talbots will actively explore other strategic options.

Talbots, which sells women's clothing and accessories, has struggled for some time and posted annual losses for four of the five past years.

The company tried to reverse its downward spiral by cutting jobs, closing stores, lowering inventory, limiting marketing spending and trimming employee hours. But Talbots continues to look for other solutions to its woes. Its management has said it is considering all its strategic alternatives and is seeking a new leader for the company.

Talbots also reported on Friday that its fiscal first-quarter net income rose to $1.09 million, or 2 cents per share, from $739,000, or 1 cent per share, a year ago. Excluding restructuring charges and other items, earnings from continuing operations were 9 cents per share.

Revenue for the period ended April 28 fell 8 percent to $275.9 million from $301.3 million, partly hurt by store closings.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected a loss of 2 cents per share on revenue of $272.5 million.

Talbots had 516 stores in 46 states and Canada at the end of the first quarter.

Asteroid nudged by sunlight: Most precise measurement of Yarkovsky effect

Friday, May 25, 2012

Scientists on NASA's asteroid sample return mission, Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx), have measured the orbit of their destination asteroid, 1999 RQ36, with such accuracy they were able to directly measure the drift resulting from a subtle but important force called the Yarkovsky effect ? the slight push created when the asteroid absorbs sunlight and re-emits that energy as heat.

"The new orbit for the half-kilometer (one-third mile) diameter 1999 RQ36 is the most precise asteroid orbit ever obtained," said OSIRIS-REx team member Steven Chesley of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. He presented the findings May 19 at the Asteroids, Comets and Meteors 2012 meeting in Niigata, Japan.

Observations that Michael Nolan at Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico made in September 2011, along with Arecibo and Goldstone radar observations made in 1999 and 2005, when 1999 RQ36 passed much closer to Earth, show that the asteroid has deviated from its gravity-ruled orbit by roughly 100 miles, or 160 kilometers, in the last 12 years, a deviation caused by the Yarkovsky effect.

The Yarkovsky effect is named for the nineteenth-century Russian engineer who first proposed the idea that a small rocky space object would, over long periods of time, be noticeably nudged in its orbit by the slight push created when it absorbs sunlight and then re-emits that energy as heat.

"The Yarkovsky force on 1999 RQ36 at its peak, when the asteroid is nearest the sun, is only about a half ounce ? about the weight of three grapes on Earth. Meanwhile, the mass of the asteroid is estimated to be about 68 million tons. You need extremely precise measurements over a fairly long time span to see something so slight acting on something so huge."

Nolan and his team measured the distance between the Arecibo Observatory and 1999 RQ36 to an accuracy of 300 meters, or about a fifth of a mile, when the asteroid was 30 million kilometers, or 20 million miles, from Earth.

"That's like measuring the distance between New York City and Los Angeles to an accuracy of two inches, and fine enough that we have to take the size of the asteroid and of Arecibo Observatory into account when making the measurements," Nolan said.

Chesley and his colleagues used the new Arecibo measurements to calculate a series of 1999 RQ36 approaches closer to Earth than 7.5 million kilometers (4.6 million miles) from the years 1654 to 2135. There turned out to be 11 such encounters.

By combining the radar results from Arecibo Observatory with infrared results from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, the scientists also learned that asteroid 1999 RQ36 is very light ? it has around the same density as water, Chesley reported.

"This study is an important step in better understanding the Yarkovsky effect ? a subtle force that contributes to the orbital evolution of new Near-Earth Objects," said Dante Lauretta, the mission's principal investigator and professor of planetary science at the University of Arizona.

Lauretta added that "this information is critical for assessing the likelihood of an impact from our target asteroid and provides important constraints on its mass and density, allowing us to substantially improve our mission design."

The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is to launch in 2016, reach asteroid (101955) 1999 RQ36 in 2019, examine it up close during a 505-day rendezvous, then return at least 60 grams (~1.9 ounces) of it to Earth in 2023.

"In addition to the exciting Yarkovsky results, the low density shows that 1999 RQ36 is probably a loose aggregate of rocks--a so called rubble pile," said Jason Dworkin, the mission's project scientist and Chief of Astrochemistry at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. "This makes it an ideal target for OSIRIS-REx to collect loose surface material."

(AP) ? Udonis Haslem insists he meant no harm. The NBA deemed otherwise, and the Miami Heat will be without one of their co-captains when they try to close out the Indiana Pacers on Thursday night.

Haslem was suspended for Game 6 of the Miami-Indiana Eastern Conference semifinal series, a matchup where emotions boiled over in a runaway Heat victory on Tuesday night. The NBA also said Miami reserve center Dexter Pittman will miss three games in response to his flagrant foul against Indiana backup guard Lance Stephenson in the final seconds of Game 5.

Indiana's Tyler Hansbrough was not suspended, although the league upgraded his foul against Miami's Dwyane Wade to a flagrant-2 on Wednesday ? which, if called that way during Game 5, would have brought an automatic ejection. Hansbrough struck Wade in the head, opening a cut over his right eye. Moments later, Haslem committed a flagrant foul against Hansbrough, clearly in response to the play against Wade.

So while Haslem sits Thursday, Hansbrough may play.

"It's the playoffs. There's always some kind of noise," Haslem said Wednesday, before the NBA penalties were announced. "We're focused on going on there and it's going to be probably the most hostile environment we've faced so far."

Except now, the Heat will face that environment without Haslem.

The Heat lead the series 3-2, after a 115-83 win Tuesday night in a game that had the three flagrant fouls on the court, accusations of dirty play afterward and finally with Pacers team president Larry Bird telling The Indianapolis Star that his team was "soft" in Game 5.

"I agree with his assessment. We did play soft," Indiana's Danny Granger said Wednesday. "We got smacked around. We got beat up, we got bullied, and we really didn't respond well."

Countered Miami's LeBron James, the NBA's reigning MVP: "He's just trying to amp them up. That's all. That's all it is. He knows his team isn't soft. But with them, with their backs against the wall at this point, he knows what he's doing. He's not the executive of the year for no reason."

Pittman logged only six minutes in the playoffs anyway, his presence in the postseason barely noticed until he laid out Stephenson ? who made at least one choke sign toward James earlier in the series ? with a forearm to the chin and shoulder areas.

"Hard fouls are part of the playoffs," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said Wednesday. "Fouls to the head have no place in this game, not by us, not by Miami, not by any other team in any other series. With all the concussion research that's been going on over the last few years it's a very serious matter and it just doesn't have any place in the game."

Wade sounded somewhat amused that Granger ? who's been whistled for three technicals in the series ? was one of the Pacers suggesting Haslem and Pittman should be suspended. Wade and Granger have had words during the series.

"We're not in here crying about the fouls," Wade said. "They fouled us. ... We're moving on to Game 6. We're not going to worry about what happened in Game 5. For us, it's about moving forward."

The Pacers may move forward without Granger, who sprained his left ankle in Game 5.

Granger was in flip-flops when Wednesday's practice ended, saying he was on painkillers and anti-inflammatory medication. Stephenson, who had X-rays taken to rule out any fractures to his collarbone or shoulder areas, did not practice.

"In my mind, I'm going to play," Granger said. "Elimination game, I have to play."

Vogel sounded concerned, but optimistic.

"Very much hoping he'll be available tomorrow," Vogel said. "He's a gamer. I'm thinking he'll play. But his ankle's pretty bad, so we'll see."

Vogel called Miami floppers before the series started, and it's been gritty throughout. The teams combined to shoot 66 free throws in Game 1, and there have been a combined nine technicals and flagrants called in the four games since. Tension also increased after cameras caught Stephenson making a choke sign during Indiana's Game 3 victory, and Juwan Howard confronting him about his antics before Game 4.

"It's been a physical series, started by them," Wade said.

And James said he doesn't expect things to cool down when the Pacers try to save their season in Game 6.

"I always feel like in a playoff series or certain regular-season games that a team may be trying to go for me," James said. "It's happened. I'm not saying guys are playing dirty, but certain guys say, 'You know, if you hard-foul LeBron, get him off the ball, he'll stop being aggressive and things like that.' I know when it's happening and I see when it's about to happen. I'm always in protect mode. I've been hard-fouled a lot."

James said one of those situations happened in Game 5. Indiana forward David West ? who left Tuesday's game with what the team called a sprained knee, though he insisted Wednesday he was not hurt ? took exception to a play where he was knocked backward, saying a Heat player fell into his knee.

Not long afterward, he fouled James, who said he saw West coming.

"He was the one on the floor and I was the one still standing," James said. "So I started laughing at that. But he tried to get me."

West said on Wednesday that if Indiana wants to force a Game 7 in Miami, it simply needs to play better on both ends than it did on Tuesday night.

"You've just got to stand your ground. I think that's the biggest thing," West said. "It was unfortunate, the play at the end of the game on Lance. But we've just got to deal with it, man up, handle it ? like I said, the best way you can, within the rules."

Egyptians vote for Mubarak successor in historic poll

Egyptians voted Wednesday in the country's first free presidential elections, with Islamists and secularists vying for power with competing visions of an Egypt liberated of ousted dictator Hosni Mubarak's iron grip.

Long queues of people, many in a festive mood, wound their way outside polling stations across the country throughout the day after polls opened at 8:00 am (0600 GMT).

"It's a beautiful day for Egypt," said Nehmedo Abdel Hadi, who was voting at the Omar Makram school in Cairo's Shubra neighbourhood.

"Now I feel this is my country and I have dignity," said the 46-year-old woman, who wears a full-face veil.

Across the city, in the leafy Mohandesseen neighbourhood, Rania, wearing gym clothes and a ponytail under her baseball cap, was at the front of the line.

"It's the first time in Egypt's history we choose our president," she said, preferring to keep her choice "a secret between me and my ballot box."

More than 50 million eligible voters have been called to choose one of 12 candidates wrestling to succeed ousted president Hosni Mubarak.

Voting over two days is taking place at 13,000 polling stations, with initial results expected on Sunday. Voting ends at 8:00 pm (1800 GMT) on both days.

A senior interior ministry official said police were on standby across the country and helping soldiers secure polling stations.

The election marks the final phase of a tumultuous transition overseen by the ruling military council after Mubarak's ouster in a popular uprising last year.

Pollsters say the large number of voters undecided between candidates reflecting radically different trends, and the novelty of a free presidential vote, make Wednesday's election almost impossible to call.

Turnout in the scorching heat appeared lower than in parliamentary and senate elections last winter, but many voters will cast their ballots later in the day and on Thursday.

In the port city of Suez, one voter in a queue said the landmark election showed that Egypt was moving away from its authoritarian past.

"No matter who people vote for, this vote expresses a rejection of the old regime and shows Egyptians are ready for a new chapter," said the voter Ahmed Kilani, a lawyer in his 50s.

Leading contenders include former foreign minister and Arab League chief Amr Mussa, who is seen as an experienced politician and diplomat but like Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, is accused of belonging to the old regime.

The powerful Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohammed Mursi faces competition from Abdel Moneim Abul Abul Fotouh, a former member of the Islamist movement who portrays himself as a consensus choice with a wide range of support.

Despite an official ban on campaigning during the voting, the candidates have continued giving interviews to shore up their support and denounce rivals.

Shafiq told AFP in an interview that the country would face "huge problems" if an Islamist won and that he was the only one who could stop the fundamentalists from spreading their influence.

Faruq Sultan, the head of the electoral commission, told a news conference that the commission had referred reports of violations to the public prosecutor.

The next president will inherit a struggling economy, deteriorating security and the challenge of uniting a nation divided by the uprising and its sometimes deadly aftermath, but his powers are yet to be defined by a new constitution.

Islamist candidates have promised an Islamic-based project that has prompted fears among secularists and Egypt's Coptic minority over personal freedoms and raised questions about the future of the country's lucrative tourism industry.

Shafiq and Mussa have vowed to maintain stability and restore law and order but their ties to the old regime sparked fears of renewed protests by those who will feel their revolution threatened.

The election caps a rollercoaster transition, marked by political upheaval and bloodshed, but which also witnessed democratic parliamentary elections that saw Islamist groups score a crushing victory.

The ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), in power since Mubarak's ouster, has urged Egyptians to turn out en masse to the polls, while warning against any "violation."

The SCAF has vowed to hand power to civilian rule by the end of June, after a president is elected, but many fear its retreat will be just an illusion.

The army, with its vast and opaque economic power, wants to keep its budget a secret by remaining exempt from parliamentary scrutiny, maintain control of military-related legislation and secure immunity from prosecution.

Mubarak, 84 and ailing, may watch the election from a military hospital on the outskirts of Cairo as he awaits the verdict of his murder trial on June 2.

The former strongman is accused of involvement in the killing of some 850 protesters during the uprising and of corruption.

A ball of one? Lady Gaga unsure of Indonesia show

(AP) ? Lady Gaga is as confused as anyone about whether she'll be allowed to perform in Indonesia.

Islamic hard-liners have threatened violence, saying her sexy clothes and provocative dance moves could corrupt youth. Police initially denied a permit for the "Born This Way Ball" but are now hinting the concert could ahead if the pop diva toned down the show.

She tweeted Tuesday:

"The Jakarta situation is 2-fold: Indonesian authorities demand I censor the show & religious extremist separately, are threatening violence. If the show does go on as scheduled, I will perform the BTWBall alone."

What she meant wasn't clear, and her promoters have not commented.

Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim nation of 240 million people, was supposed to be the biggest show on Lady Gaga's Asian tour.

Attraction or repulsion? New method predicts interaction energy of large molecules

Attraction or repulsion? New method predicts interaction energy of large molecules

Friday, May 18, 2012

Krzysztof Szalewicz, professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Delaware, and Rafal Podeszwa of the University of Silesia Institute of Chemistry in Poland have developed and validated a more accurate method for predicting the interaction energy of large molecules, such as biomolecules used to develop new drugs.

The research is reported as a communication in the April 27 issue of the Journal of Chemical Physics, which is the most highly cited journal in atomic, molecular and chemical physics according to Thomson Reuters. The journal is published by the American Institute of Physics. Despite appearing at the end of April, the paper was on the list of the 20 most-read articles in JCP for that month.

If you think of two molecules as a couple on a blind date, the UD method more accurately predicts their potential for attraction or repulsion. Such interactions are known as van der Waals forces after the Dutch physicist who defined them and won the 1910 Nobel Prize in physics.

The UD method is expected to enhance existing theory by enabling scientists to more accurately calculate the energy of the van der Waals interactions between molecules located several angstroms apart, which is about one-millionth of the width of a human hair. Existing theory applicable to large molecules can model such interactions within only about one angstrom.

Szalewicz says the UD method of calculating the correlation between the motions of electrons in van der Waals clusters ? technically referred to as the "dispersionless density functional plus dispersion method (dlDF+D)" ? generates more accurate predictions for the interactions of large molecules than any other published approach. It is expected to have application in computational studies of clusters and condensed phases of matter, which include solids and liquids.

Szalewicz notes that some pharmaceutical companies, particularly in Europe, have established computational groups to predict various properties of drug molecules, in particular, the abilities of drugs to form different crystallographic structures called polymorphs.

Even the simplest drugs, such as Tylenol, have several polymorphs. If a different polymorph of a drug is crystallized in the production phase than the one intended, the therapeutic properties of this polymorph may be different and its application may even result in the death of patients, he says. The defense industry also increasingly is relying on computers to predict the properties of novel materials, such as bulletproof body armor.

"Better prediction of the properties of matter using computers is important to technological progress," Szalewicz says. "Better software and computers can give you a little edge in investigating nature."

?1776? breaks revenue records at Ford's Theatre

The musical "1776" broke box office records at Ford's Theatre.

Someone ought to open up a window. Ford's Theatre's production of musical "1776" is hot as hell, bringing in more revenue than any other show since the theater reopened in 1968.

The show appealed to audiences socially, politically, financially and naturally, grossing nearly $2 million in its run, which began in March.

D.C., the country's congressional incubator, was a natural choice for the material, which focuses on the events surrounding the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independence. Authors Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone dared to put politics on paper when crafting the witty musical back in 1969. Ford's take on it closes May 19.

Clearly, the show appealed to D.C. audiences ranging from liberals to cool, cool conservative men, from students to young families.

"My strings are unstrung!" Ford's Theatre Director Paul Tetreault ? might have said if he were Thomas Jefferson's wife. Instead Tetreault released this statement: ?At Ford?s, we strive to bring American experiences to life through the intersection of history and theatre, and it has been a joy to see Washingtonians and visitors alike responding with such enthusiasm at each performance of ?1776? this spring."

Critics were a fan of the show too. Although none went so far as to proclaim, "It's a masterpiece," Washingtonian magazine, for example, awarded the production four stars.

Is anybody there who hasn't seen the production (and thus, doesn't understand its many references in this write-up)? Most remaining shows are sold out, but some tickets are available online.

Number of lyrics from "1776" that were harmed in the writing of this blog post: at least 10.
